How To Kill Gnats – The Tiny Menace
August 29th, 2008 Posted in Flies & GnatsIn a seeming re-enactment of Apocalypse Now, an army of gnats has bombarded your indoor plants, garbage cans, and dirty sink. There is only one recourse now.
It is an all out war: you vs. the gnats.
There’s no time to waste. You must search and destroy now, then figure out how to prevent the enemy from returning to your fort again. Want to know how?
This article will answer the following:
- How do you destroy gnats in your home?
- What attracts gnats into your home?
- How do you prevent gnat infestations?
How Do You Kill Gnats in Your Home?
It is time to strap on your helmet, soldier, and end the gnat occupation.
There are a couple of proven ways to get rid of gnats, both effective in their own right.

Lethal Liquids
First, you will lure the enemy into an ambush with non-toxic household liquids placed strategically in common areas for the gnat infestation. Remember, the gnats will surely have fortified positions near your houseplants, drains and trash cans.
Vinegar mixed with hand soap in a bowl will lure them from the trenches to their doom, as will a well-placed wine and sugar mixture covered with plastic wrap and poked with holes (no celebratory swigs until all targets have been eliminated).
Air Assault
Now that their numbers have been weakened, drive the invaders out. It’s time to call in an air assault (please strap on your gas mask).
Using these methods will rid your home of bugs, but you must always use caution not to hurt yourself in the process. For homes with pets and children, these chemicals are not recommended. Hair-spray, when applied directly to the swarm, will freeze their wings and suffocate them like a fly underwater. After a successful hair-spray assault, turn on all fans and open all windows, as it is time for a full out nuclear demolition.
Using a fogger should ensure that the gnats have nowhere to run (or fly) for cover, but you have to be willing to leave the front lines and sleep on a friend’s couch until it’s safe to return home.
Biological Warfare
While conventional methods are effective, you have better weapons at your disposal. Household chemicals and traditional pesticides are not the most environmentally friendly option. These products are harmful to inhale and endanger your health, your pets, and members of your family.
An alternative to the conventional is EcoSMART’s Flying Insect Killer.
How can an organic insecticide be effective? In the case of this product, all-natural oils such as peppermint, cinnamon, and sesame are used. These oils are natural defenses that plants use against insects, so you can defeat your flying foes without collateral damage.
The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) classifies this product as “minimum-risk” and is therefore safe for use around pets and humans (no need for a gas mask here).

Now that you’ve killed the enemy, it’s time to defend your territory from future occupations. First, address what attracted gnats in the first place, then take preventative measures.
What Attracts Gnats Into Your Home?
Gnats are simple creatures. The only things they need are a steady source of food and a place to reproduce. If gnats have a food source and a breeding ground, each generation can live up to 4 months, so if you don’t get rid of these pests quickly, you could be in for months of annoyance. Inside your home, there are 3 major places where they can find the food and shelter they need:
- Plants: The fungus gnat is attracted to over-watered plants. The gnat likes to lay its eggs in the over-saturated soil where the larvae can feed off the fungus and rich nutrients that form in the soil. Several types of gnat feed off decaying plant matter their whole lives.
- Sinks and Drains: Many varieties of gnat make their home near water and in the scum that collects in drains. Gnats can also find ample food left behind on dishes.
- Garbage: Dark, damp, full of rotting food: What more could a gnat want? Garbage is prime gnat real estate and probably the biggest source of your pest problem.
How Do You Prevent Gnat Infestation?
The enemy is already in your base, but that does not mean that it is too late to practice good prevention techniques. When fighting a war, the first step is to cut off your enemies supply lines. Luckily, you can do this without bringing in the heavy artillery. Keep the gnats from sending in reinforcements by:
- Sealing Trash Bags
- Cleaning Dishes & Sinks
- Taking Care Not to Over-Water Plants

i have an infestation of gnats in my house. i have no house plants, keep fruit in refrig and keep my sink drain clean. they are in every room of the house especially bathroom/kitchen. how can i kill htem
By Nick Buchheit on Oct 2, 2008
Patrick,
I would try the using my PHASE2: Lethal Liquids method first. This involves: Vinegar mixed with hand soap in a bowl or a wine and sugar mixture covered with plastic wrap and poked with holes. Place these in the locations where the infestation is most severe. If the swarm is big enough spray them with EcoSmart insecticide. That will finish them off.
I’m thinking there might be some still water, or water leakage somewhere in the kitchen and bathroom. This could be why they are attracted to these areas.

I got rid of my plants that my mom sent me and now I got silk plants. I cleaned my sinks out and bathroom. Now they are coming into my bedroom. I don’t have anything in there except an air duct. I have been noticing that when my heat comes on I get little black bugs flying around and they like to fly into your eyes. I will try that spray though thanks alot.

I have gnats. They fly around my kitchen and every day when I go to the sink they swarm upwards. They are now going into the other rooms and are driving me crazy. I have tried the vinegar and soap method and have only caught a few. We do not have plants, but do have 2 rabbits and 4 dogs. How do I kill these pests?
By Nick on Jan 2, 2009
Kathy,
Sounds like you might need to check your drainage in your sink. Something is attracting them there. As long as there are no dirty dishes or food left over in the sink. The next best thing is to really try and spray them.
By Celeste on Jan 11, 2009
We have a major Sand Gnat Situation! They even swarm around the window of our kitchen door just waiting to attack. We have to run to the car, get in quick and close the doors fast or we get majorly bitten. They don’t come out when it’s really cold or very hot during the daytime. Any suggestions on how to handle this? What plants can we put around our backyard and porch to minimize this situation?
Thanks Nick.

I am bothered with tiny, tiny flying insects in my living room. I don’t have over watered plants but do have two plants that are watered slightly every two weeks. You sit down to relax and read the paper and they fly around your head. They are so small you can’t see them or swat them. What can I do?
By EcoSMART Kara on Feb 5, 2009
Celeste,
First, I would recommend protecting yourselves with insect repellent, like DEET-free EcoSMART’s Organic Insect Repellent which keeps mosquitoes, ticks, AND gnats away.
Secondly, the best way to get rid of the infestation is to treat moist areas where sand flies thrive and lay eggs; this includes areas such as: clogged gutters, mulch or wood chips, dripping faucets, planters, drainage ditches, sewers, leaves, and any other place that is wet. Check out such areas to see if they are the source and spray with EcoSMART’s Organic Flying Insect Killer, which is safe for the environment.
By EcoSMART Kara on Feb 5, 2009
Kathy Campbell,
For drain fly control:
1. Scrub drain pipes with a stiff brush to remove all slime.
2. Pour hot water down the drain for temporary control – larvae can trap air bubbles and remain submerged for at least a day.
3. Clean your garbage can and under appliances, like your refrigerator and microwave.
For more information see: How to Get Rid of Gnats on our blog.

Vaness Rupp,
Perhaps you have drain flies, rather than fungus gnats. Refer to post above.
Thanks!

To find out what you are dealing with take a small fan,one ripe bananna and a pair of panty hose.
Tape the top of hose to the front of fan placing the ripe bananna at the back of fan.Let the fan run all day and before turning the fan off tie off hose. You might be surprised what you find!

I must say, when summer arrived I was excited to plant some potted basil plants, tomatoes, etc in my studio. About 5 weeks later those little bugger gnats have taken over. I’ve laid out the vinegar dishes which is helping, but I may need something stronger. I am actually really interested in trying this product. Perhaps I can do a product review for it my site http://www.theenvironmentalblog.org. Looks like a great product. =)

I came across your web site. I have a bad problem with what I believe are gnats. They have swarmed in all of the rooms of our house. A lot of the solutions, besides prevention, you have given on your site have produced no results. We are working extra hard to keep all organic material away. They just keep multiplying. What else will it take? The solution of vinegar and soap has no effect. Sticky traps only catch a few. Any other helpful tips?

I have scrubbed everything in my kitchen and still the gnats are flying everywhere. We have a conure who eats fresh fruit and veggies and I cannot keep the gnats out of his food, even though it’s only in his cage for an hour, I can’t use pesticides around the bird and hate the thought of moving out for a day to have the place bombed. Could I use the ecosmart around the bird?

I have what appear to be fungus gnats in my office at work where I have a potted plant. I’ve tried the wine mixture and trapping them with a fan and hose. I can’t spray anything toxic at work and don’t want to kill the plant. What’s next to try?

Count me in, please! I read this website a few weeks ago and have doing the vinegar & soap thing. Kills a bunch but it doesn’t seem to lower their numbers any. I don’t want to cook, eat, or invite anyone in my home. These things DO bite, too!
I recently cut my finger really bad trying to swat one near my food processor. Stupid move but I was driven temporarily insane. Anyone who has them knows what I mean!
I would try anything to get rid of them!

I don’t know what I have here, but I can not see them unless the sun is directly behind them. If I look directly at the sun at dusk, them shade my eyes from the sun, I can see them in the back gound – millions of them. Tiny little clear things zipping around like aliens. They are so thick that I know I’m breathing them and they are all over me. At first they were only outside, but they are obviously inside now, because they are small enough to get through the tiniest screen. I’m constantly itching, but it doesn’t feel like I’m being bitten.
This all started when I removed my lawn and replaced it with drought tolerant plants. The last phase was to lay pine bark mulch as ground cover. The next day, I notices a small swarm hovering over a section of my yard. The sun had to be in the background to see them. They were about a millimeter in size and resembled gnats, but clear. What I’m seeing now though is much, much smaller and much larger in number..
I’ve never experienced anything like this before and am afraid that there is no way to get rid of these things.
They never seem to land on anything, they just zig zag erratically. Well, they must land, because Ican feel them all over me. They don’t seem to be bothering my cat, thankfully, but these things are so much smaller than fleas that she may not notice them. They don’t really bother me that much, but I notice I’m constantly brushing this invisible source of distraction away. It almost looks like a swarm of dust, when I look at them at dusk, with the sun in the background.
Since I’m breathing these things, should I be worried?
Will anything that happens naturally in nature, like the change of seasons, get rid of these things?
Since they didn’t show up until the mulch was spread out, I’m assuming that it is the source of where these things came from, but I’ve spread over 2000 sq ft and can not tale it away at this point. I’ve seen pictures of fungus gnats and I don’t thing this is what is flying around here. Also, they don’t look like bed bugs and they don’t bite.
So what do I do??
Thanks for any information.
If this EcoSmart is a solution, please, by all means, I’ll be glad to try it out!

We just moved in to our first home a few months ago, I was excited about buying new plants to fill up the house but now I’ve got nats everywhere! I’m currently using sticky tape and have caught a ton but they’re still in the house, bathrooms & kitchen. The house is only a few years old, would they be in a new house drain?
I would love to be one of your product testers.

I have been trying to get rid of weavels, gnats and fruit flies in my home for about 6 months. I have cleaned out all the corners of my kitchen thouroghly and now they will disappear for awhile but always come back. They are everywhere even in an upstairs bedroom and bath. I have used foggers twice thru-out the house…they still come back.I will try the vinegar and dish washing soap but I have a feeling that I will need more than just that. HELP!!!

I am going to try the vinegar solution. I too have tried everything. Recently had drains cleaned, soaped out the garbage cans, repotted the few plants I have, no fruits or veggies lying out ever, yet the gnats keep coming. Hoping this solution gets rid of them – FOR GOOD! Thanks for the tip.
By Victoria on Sep 29, 2009
I also have trouble with the Fungus gnats. I have them mostly coming from my plants that need constant moisture. It helps to keep your dishes and sinks clean, but does’nt really matter that much because the reason you’re seeing them around your sinks is because that is where they are breeding (DOWN INSIDE THE DRAIN TRAP). Yes, that is where they lay their eggs. It helps to pour just a little Bleach, Pinesol or Drain Cleaner into the each drain in your house. Kitchen, Bathroom Sink, Bath Tub drain, etc. Make sure you get every one in the house, Basement as well. There is always sitting water in your drain pipes. Even tho it gets rinsed often when running water, they are still attracted to the mold, fungus, slime, whatever is building up in the pipes. You must do this every 3 days or so. Let it sit over night before rinsing out. I’m going to try some sticky tape today and the vinegar and soap dish next to plants in in each room.
I know that Bleach is not natural and the fumes are toxic. So it would be GREAT to have an ALL NATURAL PRODUCT that is safe for people, animals and the environment. So I would LOVE to try your EcoSMART Natural Product. And I will be your Best Commercial!!!

Please help! I do not have plants, my trash is mostly paper and I do not keep fruit sitting out. These gnats are everywhere and I am constantly itching-these things bite! I have put apple cidar vinegar mixed with dish soap in paper cups all over the apartment, no lids or saran wrap. This did NOTHING but pissed the gnats off and more started coming! i have a real problem with gnats right now. Everywere we try to eat fruit we have a problem. You can’t set your grapes down for a minute. At times, earlier I thought we might have fruit flies, but I’m not sure what they look like but they were bigger than these gnats. I found a squashed grape that looked a little brown like it had been there awhile, but the gnats knew it because there were little gnat maggots feeding on it. Yuck. I have never used anything except wine or vinegar because of other birds and animals in the house. Alot drown but alot remain. Hopefully these green products will work.

I have these pesky little gnats or fruit flies I am not sure which they are, and I have tried everything to get rid of them, but they will not stay away. I do not have any fruit laying around and I keep a lid on my garbage can so where are they coming from? My husband says those bugs come because my kitchen is dirty, but my kitchen is spotless what is going on? We have used bleach down the drains, drain opener, vinegar and baking soda, so what is next.

We just purchased a home with a pool. The house appeared to be completely clean when we moved in last week but I am noticing gnats EVERYWHERE now. Especially outside. They are starting to drive me nuts. I had no idea that overwatering plants could help increase their population. I will pay better attention and water less – but not kill my plants of course. We seal our garbage and dishes are washed daily as dirtied. We have dogs and cats and I do not want them to be harmed in our quest to destroy the gnat. Thanks for the wonderful suggestions and opportunity to test your product.

I am loosing a battle with some kind of gnat right now.
I have a large pet Parrot; so I’m familiar with standard precautions, and basic home-remedies used in keeping ahead of all the flying/crawling ‘Nasties’ out there. It is a never ending mission in my life.
A couple of months ago I moved to Clear Lake. Perfect little mid-century modern house in the Riviera hills, with a spectacular view of the lake. ‘Be careful what you wish for.’
The landscaping has a lot of bark ground-cover that is old and moldy, there is quite a bit of deferred maintenance in overgrown shrubs and grasses that are damp. And lets not forget the Lake – that’s a lot of standing water!
I don’t know if they are Drain Gnats, Fungus Gnats, Fruit Gnats, OR EVERY-DARN-GNAT-ON-THE-PLANET Gnats. I just need to keep them out of the house, while I get my new space suitably policed-up and non-gnat-friendly. I need a Magic Door-Mat that will repel them from sneaking in by the thousands………
But with a Parrot – toxicity is a real issue. Macaws are very sensitive to anything ‘chemical’.
By Pat Kerschieter on Nov 2, 2009
I have tried the vinegar also sticky “fly traps” all to no avail. These things are driving me crazy!!! (Crazier than I already am! lol) I need help and advise. We have moved all trash cans to the deck, I have cleaned the sink and drain, have swatted and cursed, HELP!!!! These things are a little bigger than “no see ‘em gnats” but they are everywhere, mostly in the kitchen area. I believe they are a kind of gnat, after seeing the other posts. Once again, HELP! I’m being invaded here!

Just found your website and would love to test your EcoSmart product in our office building. Once we think the gnat problem is solved, they begin appearing again. Obviously, with so many different people in the building, it is difficult to control everyone’s area but we do have a rule about no food discarded in the trash cans in the cubicles/offices and no food uncovered in any work area. Generally speaking, we keep our building very clean and do have an exterminator service our building once a month. No chemicals are allowed inside the building, just traps etc. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. We are an ecco friendly company so your product would fit in nicely. I will try the vinegar and soap solution in the problem areas and see if that resolves the situation.

I do animal rescues, and a few months ago, i had someone drop of a box of ginea pigs, of course when i got home and seen them, I took them right inside. this box came with more than a mess with the ginea pigs. now I have hundreds of little gnats flying around, i just can’t seem to get rid of them. I have tried the sticky strips, cleaning everything, drains floors walls. take the trash out every day after dinner, dishes done right after a meal. I tried the vigegar and soap along with vinegar and sugar, got some of them, but didn’t even put a dent in their population. I do have lots of animals, snakes, lizards, turtles, birds, dogs. Over a week ago I notice a few fruit-flies in my kitchen and bathroom so I use a a flying spray bug to get rid of them. However, I then kept noticing more and more everyday since I first saw them. They are in my kitchen, bathroom, closet, living-room and bedrooms. Saw I started to look around my co-op to see where they are coming from and I see them on the inside of all the windows in my co-op. So I when crazy spray all the windows with flying insect spray. I when out and bought No-Pest Strips, and Indoor Flying Traps and have them hanging around my apartment. I don’t keep fruits around since I am not a fruit lover I don’t keep dishes in the sink, dirty cloths around,my co-op (apartment)is clean and all I have is a really small plant that does not require to be water that offend. The only other thing that I can think of is the maybe they could be coming from the apartment below me. I do see them around the bathroom windows at time. If the people below me are not clean people could the fruit-flies be coming from their apartment? And how could they make their way up to my apartment and what can I do to keep them from infesting my apartment?

Some of these gnats have actually bitten me and I have to antibotic cream on the area.
The thing is I have no plants and keep a clean home. Currently doing the thing to clean the drains and have also used bug spray that doesn’t seem to stop them much. Might do me in before them. Also someone mention seeing the swarms of tiny tiny gnats outside, I have also seen that. Open the door to my condo and swarm in. I want to use something is Ecosmart to the enviroment so would love to become a tester. Please please help…before they do me in.

Ahhhh… bet I have situation with gnats that people in Arizona are struggling with. Spider knats are greish in color and you can see clearly their bigger wings. They are coming from the back yard weeds and are somehow still getting in a closed window. I am freaking out because they are all over our master bath and bedroom. No problems with plants, sinks, or food out. Do not know what to do I am going to try those home remedies. But I am fearful that there isn’t a solution and the weeds are coming down today hopefully this helps the problem. They are trying to escape 120 degree heat I know but is there anything else I can do???????

Hey Amanda,
Try combining the home remedies with the EcoSMART products and you should be able to solve your gnat problem in no time.
Thanks for commenting – and good luck!

I have a major problem with gnats (or something thats bitting me. I have tried the vinegar, soap etc but to no avail. This week has been the worst, i ended up with a bad infection in my leg, ended up in A & E, sorted that one by having anti-biotics through a drip. Brought mosqitue plug inns wrapped mysaelf in a sheet so they could not bite me in the night, guess what woke up with a lump on my head and face got me there instead. I bleach the sink before i go to bed, no live plants in the house no food or dishes anywhere HELP

Great suggestions. Now how about exterminating them from the yard close around the home. It seems that mulch is the source, but how to protect against them since the flower bed does need mulch.
By anthony on Jun 22, 2010
I actually tried your product and it really didn’t seem to work. I tried everything from sprays to soaps. The best thing I found was if you have houseplants you have no choice but to repot them and rinse out the roots. Also the best thing to do is put sand in your potted plants that prevents gnats from returning. I’ve been gnat free for months now.

I’ve only seen one other person write and say they have seen these bugs in animal cages. We seem to get these every summer (I live in Florida, so it may have something to do with it) however these are small, but not invisible. You can see them. We have a ferret, a rabbit, domestic dumbo fancy rats, and cats. You can see these small black flying bugs crawling over the animal’s feces and urin soaked bedding.
The only way to really combat them is to continually clean the cages and surrounding areas. All of our animals are indoor, even the rabbit. I’m wondering if EcoSMART is OK to use around animals. So far we have been able to keep them to a minimum, but they keep coming back. We believe they come through our screened porch. And we never find them near the sinks or food at all, just in animal cages.
Hope this helps.

We have these ‘big’ gnats (You can clearly see them, about the size of ants) ALL over our house!! They are swarming up the walls and on the counters by EVERY door and window in the house, and they BITE! Sleeping is not easy, and you can’t get outside and into your car without bringing at least 1000 of them in with you. I’ve tried the vinegar/soap solution, we keep the trash taken out, and the dishes washed. We spray them with Raid, and they die, but are ‘replaced’ within 10-15 minutes! They are nowhere near the indoor plants, and there is no standing water anywhere around, we’re in the Arizona desert. Help??

I have maintained house plants in my home for 17 years. Now suddenly, I purchase one new plant from a local shop, and my home has been invaded by gnats. I discarded the contamination source plant, however, my older plants now are infested. I tried the normal home remedies, and reduced the population temporarily, but not completely. I think only the strongest biters survived!

I desperately need to rid my house of its gnat infestation. They don’t respond to the apple cider vinegar and soap lure, they aren’t interested in fruit. I’ve tried fly paper, but it doesn’t get them either. They are EVERYWHERE!!!
I have been vacuuming them up, but that is a long tedious process..and they multiply overnight by the thousands!

I have several rare tropical plants which I have had for years. They had not been transplanted in almost 10 years and I was advised by the original person that 1st gave me a start of it, to transplant it in a mixture of Orchid Bark and soil. As soon as I did this my office and now the rest of my home is infested with these fying nats. I am battling with cancer and have been very ill. This situation is making it harder on me. I have tried setting out dishes of orange juice which has caught a few of them, and am now trying the vinegar and dish soap. I also burned a scented candle which drew them right into the wax. If I do not get this situation under control very soon, I will have a big problem and am getting too weak to have to deal with something else, as I can barely keep up with the daily functions of life as it is now. Any help that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to lose these plants that I have had for over 30 years and are so very special to me, yet do not want a home over run with these bugs. Please help. I would love to be a product tester.

I’ve had gnats/fruit flies in the kitchen for the past 2 weeks and it is driving me insane. The are congregating at the water dispenser in the refrigerator. I bought the Hot Shot natural flying insect spray with Lemongrass oil…smells good but doesn’t work. Today I tried applecider vinegar with a few drops of Dawn dish detergent. That seems to work some, but the most effective thing I’ve found is a spray bottle filled with alcohol. The alcohol does not leave residue. I killed quite a few today and will start again tomorrow.

Ah yes, I’m currently fighting WWIII with my gnats or maybe midges. Mine came from my guiena pigs cage. Her water bottle was leaking so the bedding was extra damp in one far off corner where the water dripped dripped dripped, thus we have gnats. These are fairly large, and the females are larger and bite. I’ve smacked a few of te blood filled suckers. They are not Mosquitos… I’m in Texas so I know my skeeters. During the day the gnats dive bomb everyone but at night all roost on the ceiling. So tonight I picked up the pets food and water, and I poured bleach down my drains and put the stoppers in, made sure there’s no fruit out, trash is taken out, cleaned out the piggy and got a new wate bottle. We shall see how long it takes to see a decrease in their troop numbers, I am cutting off their support and supply routes! I actually managed to get most of them by sucking them up with the vaccum hose, right off the ceiling or smooth clean out of the air! I must have vaccumed up 70% of them! Tomorrow I’m gonna try hairspray, cus those little suckers are driving me bonkers!

We have about 3 or 4 different types of tiny flying insects in our house (last night they were 100’s of small green gnats with dangling legs & a bigger one that looks like a large mosquito). None of them bite. They are worse when it’s very hot outside. They are generally only around later at night where there’s a light source in the corner of our living room. No sign of them near drains, garbage, or our one & only house plant, which is only watered about once every 10 days. There are tons of them outside (we live beside a farm). We have window screens but I can’t understand how the bigger ones would get through those. Can they be breeding in the walls somewhere and getting into the house that way? Need help .. it’s me or them!!!

OMG I can’t believe there are so many others experiencing the same hell as I am with these gnats. I’ve had them for 4 months and have rigorously fought back. I have had two professonals here (2nd one just today, so we’ll see). I have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) so can’t use the “big guns” What to do, what to do!

Hi, We have recently, over the last few months, had an infestation of gnats. I think they are fungus gnats as there seem to be many swarming around my house plants. I have had these plants for years. But did repot them this summer. Could the larvae have been in the soil I bought? (Big name brand.) The gnats are now a pest in every room in the house. I have asthma and don’t want to use any noxious sprays that will cause an attack. I would love to test your product.

Ok, I give up. We’ve been battling gnats for weeks. Have had a extermination company come out and still our store gets invaded every evening. We use fans to attempt to keep them off some food and a hand held vacuum to suck the flying pests – which works rather well but only a temporary, time consuming fix. Can’t wait to try EcoSmart!
By Melissa Samac on Oct 21, 2010
I found the only way to get rid of the gnats for good is to take all of your trash out and away from your home, and then first treat the outside of your home, around the windows, doors, cracks, ect with DDT if you can get your hands on it, then DDT select places inside your home, where protective clothing and mask while spraying, remove all dishes, glasses and anything you place food on from your kitchen, spray down sink, around pipes, and any other sources of water, including all areas in bathroom, window air conditioners, everything. Also spray on your plants, and the plant soil. Just make sure you know what you are doing, how much to use, ect. This is not recommended if you have birds that live inside your home or near your home as pets. Do not go overboard spraying your whole house, or outdoor area. It may not work for a few days as DDT should only be used to treat surfaces where the gnats breed and most seen, at night, turn off all light sources in home and use flash light to check walls, plants, areas in the kitchen and bathroom to find out where they “rest” as this is usually where all of the new ones come from after you think you killed the ones you can see flying. The DDT in these select airs will prevent this, you should get another spray made to spray in air, to kill flying bugs. I suggest using a professional spray found on the internet, not Raid type products, as you need to spray the entire can of these products just to kill most of the flying gnats you see, and bug bombs simply do not work, as the gnats simply go into tiny openings in your home, like wall sockets and will return when the fog clears. Use the professional air spray the night you discover the gnats with flash light, then apply the DDT in morning, if there are remaining living gnats after you return to home after DDT treatment, reapply professional air spray on them. I recommend then leaving for the night if possible, or if unable wait at least 2-4 hours, upon returning home vent your home, avoiding opening doors or windows you suspect the gnats could enter from. If you have a strong HEPA air filter(s), use them instead, along with any vent fans in your home, such as in bathrooms, and above stoves. Leave air/heat off while doing DDT treatment, and during second professional air spray treatment, do not turn on until you return home and vent home for at least 1 hour. Also, be aware that all products that actually work used to kill flying bugs like gnats/fruit flies are very toxic to fish, as well as birds, this includes store bought products. So cover fish take in sealed plastic if unable to relocate fish to outside tank, avoid getting ANY product in the water, or on the tank itself. Although these products are not toxic if used properly to other mammals, humans, dogs, cats, etc. The should be all be moved at least 150 feet away from home while treating outside and inside. Even further depending on wind, all pet food, and dishes should also be removed and make sure you wash all bedding, towels, ect. that were not removed prior to treatment, also rent a carpet cleaner if you have small children, or are very concerned about pets, but if you use the DDT properly, you will not spray on large areas of carpet, or areas you will come into contact with, however the spray treatment will get on rugs, though only small amounts of active chemical will remain over a period of 4-6 hours, but I suggest using regular vacuum on all carpets, and other house hold items, and wash counters in kitchen, and floors not covered with rug or carpet and other commonly use surfaces with household cleaners. If you have the resources, a professional HEPA system is best to use 4-6 hours after treatment of home, as windows and doors can remain closed except one if needed to run hose out of, or a system used by firefighters to remove smoke from building after fire, commonly used on demo and construction projects as well. Or you can hire one of the flood/fire clean up companies to do this for you. A professional exterminator cannot work with DDT, so I would only recommend their services for the 2nd non-DDT spraying if you do not wish to do it yourself. However you can purchase all of the same products they use for about $8-$12 depending on which one you select on the internet. Do your research before this solution, the only 100% effective method of eliminating all of the gnats and other household bugs, including bed bugs that will not cost you thousands of dollars and putting a tent on your house for a week. Total cost, including all supplies, like mask, protective gloves and clothing is about $70. A company will charge you much more for what is most likely going to be a short term, or completely ineffective service. If it will take you a while to obtain the DDT, which I will not tell you how to do so, but you can easily find out, I suggest buying and using the professional non-DDT sprays in the mean time, purchase both a surface spray and air spray, as it will help keep the numbers of gnats down, slowing their breeding, which will make the final treatment much easier, and provide relief in the short term. Make sure you know exactly what type of bug you are dealing with, as they may all sound like the same one, they probably are not, and depending where you live, it may be something that sounds like a gnat or a regular fruit fly, it may be something completely different, more harmful, and you should base your choice of professional chemicals on that exact type of bug. The DDT will likely work on all indoor and most outdoor incests as most have no tolerance to it like they do to more common chemicals. This is why the common sprays you find in stores simply do not work, they will only reduce the number of visible gnats for a short period. I hope that helps!

Okay, My husband & I swear by EcoSmart! We moved into what seemed to be a nice clean complex but soon remembered the whole “book: cover ratio.” We discovered that the next door dwellers were not so…ummm…at all concerned with sharing space with all that crawls in the night, nor the gnats! GROSS!! Concerned for our dog more than ourselves breathing bug sprays we looked high and low for something safe. We finally found EcoSmart, in all places- Vons for the amazingly low price $5.00!! The results were worth a million times the price! We finally won the battle of moving to another apt, on the otherside of the complex. We unleashed almost an entire bottle in the empty new splace before moving anything. That was mid March, we didn’t see anything until Sept. However, just this week we noticed we have another dweller situation at the end of the hall. So nice of her to announce herself with the rude, disgusting, and most inconsiderate practice of stacking her garbage in the hall. So again, we and the others who are now dealing with the swarm bestowed upon us are fighting the good fight.
As much faith in the EcoSmart as I have, I still have to wonder (and search), is there someone, dept or place that I can call and report such unhealthy -1st and foremost- behavior that is causing gnats to swarm in the hall so thick they literally make it darker than it used to/should be? Anyone….? HELP!

I have a fungus gnat problem. They are in my large houseplant in my apartment. I treated my plant with Bt (mosquito larva killing bacteria) water and hung up sticky traps, including one on/next to my plant. The traps have caught quit a few but I think the flies are still emerging from the soil. I am going to repot my large plant in new soil that drains better than the miraclegrow it is in now. Still haven’t figured out how to do this in an apartment but I will.
Is there anything else I can do? Are you still looking for testers?

the most rewarding way to kill these boogers is to spray with hairspray. especially when they annoyingly fly around your head and try to go up your nose. Just step back, grab a can of the cheap stuff, and with one spray you have rendered them flightless. It’s awesome! I have cacti and succulents in my kitchen that they have been starting a colony on. I shake each plant, let them swarm, then spray! As they crawl around on the floor I smush them and wipe them up with a paper towel. REVENGE IS MINE! Go medieval on their gnat a$$e$, use hairspray.

ya know i have a few in my house and found a few around my bathroom sink. One thing i have found is they like light. They always come around my computer screen. So to drive them away from me and back into the bathroom i turn on a brighter light in the bathroom and make the rest of the house dark. They will immediatly go there. I then lock them in there with me and spray them all with windex. Works like a charm, havent seen one in two hours. good luck

The gnats I am having problems with are being attracted to light. They are getting into the house at night when the lights are on. They are mainly in 2 bedrooms. My problem is I do not know how they are getting into a closed bedroom. If I knew I could be more proactive. No, there is no rotten food etc. around other than the lights are on. But they come in by the hundreds. If anyone has ideas on how they get in please help. Thank You!

I love the idea of being eco friendly. I noticed when there was a spoon left on the kitchen counter, the gnats I’ve been annoyed with for a few days now seem to love gathering around the spoon (which by the way had BBQ sauce on it which included the vinegar I used to make it). I got a paper napkin, dipped it in my sauce and placed it inside of a ziplock baggy, I punched a 1/2 dime size hole in the baggy and walked away, about 15 minutes later it was covered with gnats. I didn’t have any hairspray so I sprayed the ones on the outside of the bag with plegde to make their wings too heavy to fly, then took a clean napkin and started smashing them including the ones in the baggy, they were sitting ducks. I will repeat this as long as I see them but after 2 traps I think I’ve got them all and will take the necessary precautions to prevent this from happening again. Hip Hip horray!!!!!!!!!!!!

They still continue to live, but now they don’t thrive anymore.I try washing my fruit when I get it just in case their are eggs on them, and I refrigerate them. I had some in my sink’s garbage deposal and someone told me to pour bleach on both sides of the drain, cover both drains, let the bleach sit for about 20 minutes and then have hot water run on both sides for about 5 minutes each (turn the disposal on when using the hot water on the side with the deposal. That was the only thing that worked for my kitchen sink gnat problem. They were gone at the end of the process.

By Bill D on Aug 9, 2011
Ok, I have a huge gnat problem. I have tried the vinegar and caught a few. Poured boiling water down my drains and bleach too. Several times too. Closed and put towels at bottom of all doors to try and see where the gnats are breeding. The bug bombs are worthless.
I taped clear plastic over air ducts to see if I could possibly capture them in my air ducts. Not one was captured.
Local pest control company was called in and they determined that the gnats are a fungus gnat..duh. They could spray but that would be only a temp fix. I was needing to find the source..duh again.
My wife has sprayed a fortune of bug spray to try to control the pesty lil beasts.
They are found mostly at my 6 ft window in my living room but are also in every room.
I have no plants in my house, take out my garbage often, and keep the fruit in my fridge.
I crawled my attic and found nothing.
I am completely stumped with the gnats, especially with all what we have done.
Any more suggestions that I can do?

We appear to have gnats come in on the vegetables we bring in from either our garden outside or from the store. I hang fly paper everywhere, and I capture 30-50 gnats a week, but they keep coming back. The worst part is bringing home loaves of bread wrapped in plastic bags. You find gnats inside the plastic crawling all over the bread a day later!! The only solution is to freeze the bread when you get it. I will try the bleach suggestions above in the drains. I have noticed that when the temperature recently dropped below 60F outside the gnats went dormant – I took down all the fly paper, and when the temperature rose, the gnats came back.
