How to Get Rid of Crickets
September 19th, 2008 Posted in Ornamental & Lawn Pests
You are finally resting in bed after a long day. Your window is open so you can hear the crickets chirping in the distance. The sound is so relaxing, until you realize that one of the violinists is not outside at all! It is in your room.
Besides being distracting when you are about to snooze, crickets can cause damage to your food, furs, fabrics, clothing, carpeting, wallpaper, wood and rubber. Also, crickets outside can cause damage to garden flowers, vegetable crops, and your yard that you work so hard on keeping greener than your neighbors’.
Fortunately, there are several methods of how to get rid of crickets. So if you’re really determined to stop the summer symphony that has made its way into your bedroom, you can do it! Just remember to “always let your conscience be your guide!” (Although, Jiminy Cricket probably wouldn’t approve of your plans.)
This article will describe:
- Cricket prevention
- How to get rid of crickets
But first, watch this short video of a cricket:
How to Prevent Crickets
Crickets are sneaky little buggers that like hiding and crawling through cracks rather than politely knocking at your front door.
Don’t worry! You can outsmart the pests to avoid a situation like this in your home:

There are several preventative measures you can take to avoid becoming a landlord for crickets:
- Seal any cracks in windows, screens, foundation and exterior walls.
- Keep any grasses near your home trimmed short.
- Rake any grass clippings or leaves several yards from your home.
- Keep plants about one foot away from the perimeter of your home, if possible.
- Seal trash receptacles and keep them several yards from your home.
- Clean debris from your gutters and rain pipes.
- Keep your home’s damp areas clutter-free to avoid providing hiding places.
- Turn off your outdoor lights or get dimmer ones, since light attracts crickets.
How to Get Rid of Crickets
There are several methods that you can try using to get rid of crickets depending on your preference: natural, unnatural, and alternative ways.
Natural Ways:
- Keep or encourage natural predators (indoors or outdoors):
- Cats
- Lizards
- Birds
- Non-venomous spiders
- Have good hand-eye coordination? Use a fly swatter, vacuum cleaner, or shoe to kill a single cricket.
- A homemade cricket trap using a glass jar and molasses can work.
- Fill halfway a glass jar with molasses.
- Place near cricket-infested spots.
- Safe Cricket Removal
To make and use:
Crickets will be attracted to the molasses, will jump in, and then will drown in it. Be sure to clean out the jar regularly.
Did you know crickets are closely related to cockroaches? That is why EcoSmart’s Ant & Roach Killer spray works on crickets. What is great about the spray is that it is an organic insecticide, so it is safe to use around children and pets both indoors and outdoors. Its natural ingredients, which include peppermint oil, rosemary oil, and wintergreen oil, work together to target and block a key neurotransmitter-receptor site found only in invertebrates, like crickets.
Unnatural Methods:
Chemical bug sprays that work on killing cockroaches and most other bugs work on crickets.
Spray product in places where crickets are infesting; however, be mindful that these chemicals can be dangerous to humans, so use with caution and follow the instructions on the product’s label.
Commercial cricket baits are available that work by drawing in crickets with synthetic attractants. Place baits where there are crickets, but be sure to keep pets and children away from the toxic baits.
Glue traps involve sticky adhesive strips that are best used outdoors around the perimeter of your home. The strips are often baited with attractant to lure crickets and other insects to the strip where they then stick. Place near any crevices that you think crickets might sneak in, like windows and doors. Be sure to replace the traps over time, since the adhesive becomes less sticky over time; they usually last for about 1-2 months.
Alternative Solutions:
If you kill crickets naturally, you can make yourself chocolate-covered crickets!

You will need:
- 25 adult crickets
- Several squares of semisweet chocolate
Directions:
- Prepare the crickets for consumption by rinsing them off with water after placing them in a colander and covering it with wire screening or a cheese cloth.
- Dry them by shaking the colander allowing the water to drain out.
- Put clean crickets in a plastic bag and put them in the freezer for about 15 minutes to kill them if you haven’t already.
- Take them out and rinse them again as directed before.
- You may want to remove the legs, heads, and wing cases before baking them at 250 degrees (or until crunchy).
- When you are finished dry roasting the crickets, melt the squares of semisweet chocolate in a microwave.
- Dip the crickets in the melted chocolate and lay them out to dry on a piece of wax paper.
- Enjoy!
Before you begin getting rid of crickets, keep in mind that they are considered to be good luck in Asia, especially in China…perhaps a few holes in your silk scarf will be worth the luck? Some even believe killing crickets will bring bad luck!
So, you may just want to catch the cricket and keep it as a pet. You don’t need to get a wooden cricket cage, either. All you need to do is put a layer of sand in a fruit jar, add a small bottle cap for water, and cover the jar opening with mosquito netting. Your pet cricket will eat bits of lettuce, dry oatmeal, melon or chicken bone.

We are having problems with crickets. They keep me and my cat awake at night.
I’ve killed or found at least a dozen crickets but wonder if there are more trying to get in or in where I can’t see. (they come in when the summer cools down, it can be 70 or 80 during the day but the nights are 40 to 50 degrees. Our crickets are black field crickets.(rural town, farms in the area).
Last year I tried the molasses and water—they weren’t even interested. I have found a few places to seal but would like more tips to keep them away.
Sorry if this posted multiple times–must have hit the send button by mistake.
I would love to test your product…please contact me. I work 70 miles away from where I live and could not ever spray something like Raid as I would be too worried about her getting sick from it, and I would never get back in time if she “hunted” one of the crickets with pesticide on it.
Again, I would love any and all tips to safely remove and repel crickets.

I loved the article, especially the humor. I am in a battle myself with these musical nuances. I do regret having to silence them, however, sleep is such an important aspect of life. This year, the glue traps have been working well. Although, there is one persistent bugger that is winning the battle. I shall win the war. I would love to try a natural remedy. p.s. It’s truly amazing how they can throw their “voice.”

Crickets are always in my house. The first year I moved in my new home, there were literally hundreds on the ceiling of my basement. One jumped on me. It took everything in me not to pee my pants. When I looked up, I saw my basement ceiling covered in them. It was disgusting! I used to spray things in the basement and not worry too much because they would die and they never seemed to be upstairs. For some reason, that has changed this year. I now have a child on a breathing machine and I can not spray any type of chemical in the house. I use peroxide and vinegar to clean everything but it doesn’t kill the crickets. I would love to try your product. I saw one of these things in his room last night. Please help me get rid of these things!

I recommend doing an internet search for organic pesticides and insecticides in New Zealand. I’m sure you’ll come up with an alternative in your area. Good luck!

Would like to try your products. Have heard (1) cricket (I think) under the baseboard in the kitchen. Have heard them in the garage but was not concerned. Now that I know how destructive they are I want them gone. Currently I have a loud radio with hard rock music on in the kitchen cupboard trying to scare the cricket(s)out.
