Best, Safe Non-Toxic Bug Spray for Children

October 15th, 2008 Posted in Organic & Chemical Pesticides

Mosquitoes are the “flying diseases” of the insect world. Parents need to be well-informed about the best mosquito repellent and how to safeguard their children from disease. EcoSMART’s organic bug spray protects children from mosquitoes and other insects without any potentially harmful synthetic chemicals found in conventional insect repellents.

This article covers:

  • Mosquito-borne diseases
  • How a mosquito works
  • How EcoSMART insect repellent works
  • How to apply EcoSMART insect repellent

Mosquito-borne Diseases

La Crosse encephalitis
La Crosse encephalitis usually distresses children in the Appalachian region of the United States, with nearly 50 cases of the disease surfacing each year in West Virginia. Speaking of West Virginia, make sure you check out West Run Apartments if you need housing in Morgantown.

The disease can cause complications to the central nervous system and on rare occasions, even death.

Malaria
Another more serious disease includes Malaria, which kills 2 million people around the world each year, most of them children under the age of five.

There's one common denominator in both of these disease scenarios: the group marked by the mosquitoes. Children and infants are, in fact, mosquitoes' main targets, which make young ones more susceptible to disease.

While the reasons remain unclear why a specific group is targeted, a variety of factors could play into this concept, including body chemistry, geographical location, as well as the fact that mosquitoes might be drawn in by children who exert energy and perspire more than adults.

How a Mosquito Works

The biggest problem with mosquitoes comes in the form of the blood-sucking female mosquitoes. The females depend upon blood to provide protein to make their eggs grow (which they later lay on still water).

When a female bites into a human, she injects her saliva, which contains enzymes and anticoagulants. There is no reaction the first time a human is bitten by a mosquito. However, with successive bites, the person becomes more sensitive, with small red bumps forming a day later.

People's reactions to mosquito bites are different. Some people find that they grow insensitive upon subsequent bites. Some find that they develop allergic reactions. Everyone is different.

How EcoSMART Insect Repellent Works

Conventional insect repellents on the market often use the chemical DEET, which can have a negative affect on humans causing:

  • Memory loss
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Tremors
  • Shortness of breath

Why EcoSmart's Organic Insect Repellent is Safe

The repellent is DEET-free and safe for the entire family.

Its active ingredients include:

  • Rosemary Oil
  • Cinnamon Leaf Oil
  • Lemongrass Oil
  • Geraniol

All of these ingredients appear on the Environmental Protection Agency's list of Minimum Risk Pesticide Ingredients. These ingredients are exempt from U.S. EPA pesticide registration because they are deemed harmless.

The blend of botanical oils used as the active ingredients creates a fragrance that is citrusy good with a slight minty scent.

How To Apply EcoSMART Insect Repellent

First, before spraying, parents or guardians should remember to avoid contact with the children's eyes. However, if the product does get into the eye area, adults are encouraged to flush the children's eyes with water. If irritation persists, a physician should be called.

  1. Hold six to eight inches away from skin.
  2. Spray with a slow sweeping motion.
  3. Use enough repellent to cover exposed skin.

To apply to a child's face:

  1. Spray product on the palm of a hand.
  2. Rub product onto face
  • EcoSMART can be applied directly to the skin, unlike other conventional insect repellents.
  • Apply every two to three hours (or as needed as effectiveness varies with perspiration).
  • As with any skin repellent, the product should not be sprayed into the mouth or over cuts, wounds, or irritated sunburned areas.
  • Store in an area out of reach of children when not in use.

EcoSMART's Organic Insect Repellent is the safe way to protect children from mosquitoes. Not only are the plant oils in EcoSMART products regarded as "Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS)" by the Food and Drug Administration, but they are also classified as "minimum risk" ingredients by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The essential oils like Peppermint and Rosemary are put into the same group as food and beverages. So using EcoSMART products poses as much risk to children as when they spill juice all over themselves. While accidents like spilled juice are bound to happen, accidents with DEET and other synthetic chemicals are avoidable.

Found this while looking for a safe mosquito repellant for small children. We’ve had such a wet summer and with a creek flowing through our small town, you can’t imagine how bad the mosquitoes are this summer. Would like NOT to smell like a chemical factory AND keep the skeeters away. Hope this stuff works!

The repellent does have an odor, but not a chemical odor.

Does anyone know how often can we use the spray in a day (many spray specify do not use more then 3 times a day), I guess, as in how long does the spray works ? If the effect can last 6 to 8 hours, one only need to spray no more than 3 times. if we are out camping, we need to be protected all day and all night.

I have 3 young children who loves to play outside. I do not like to spray my kids with repellent because personally I don’t like spraying them with harmful products. I would be honored to test your products and def. will be a repeat customer if I like it since I’ve been looking for a product like yours for my children.

Wow, this is excatly what is needed for my son. I cannot beleive no one has tried this yet. There is great demand for such a product. In our town there are mosquitoes everywhere and this hopefully would help get rid of them so my son can play in his backyard without us having to worry so much. Keep up the good work!!!

I have four little people and we camp. They get eaten alive by bugs and we need something that works and doesn’t smell really bad. It also needs to be safe from 1 1/2 years old on up. :D All the other bug sprays say you can only spray on the little ones once per day and it only lasts a couple hours. Hope I get picked to try! :D

I have had a hard time finding a spray I can use on my 10 month old is this safe for children under 2?

My poor daughter must have the sweetest smelling skin on the planet, because she goes outside, and is eaten alive by mosquitos. She has eczema, and very sensitive skin, so I am afraid to put anything on her skin that could make her uncomfortable, or pose potential harm to her. She needs relief so she can play and not itch like crazy! We have an irrigation canal that runs right behind our house that seems to bring in the mosquitos. I have to admit…I worry about her getting a disease as a result of her multiple mosquito bites. HELP!!!

The bugs are killing 30 acres of my land. I would really love to try this product.

My 2 and a half year old daughter is deathly allergic to mosquito bits, she swells up something aweful. Her doctor recommended putting on bug spray everyday. We live in Florida where you go to your car and are bit 5 times. I wanted something safe for her that I could use to prevent the bits. The product hasn’t gotten great reviews so we thought we would try it.

I really pray this works. My 2 year old son is miserable when he goes out to play because of being bitten and he like me has an allergic reaction to mosquitos. No matter what I have tried nothing works, so this would be a God send.

Sounds like a wonderful product, hope it will work! My son (age 2) loves to be outside but has eczema which is made MUCH worse from chemical type insect repellents with DEET. I hope this will be a safe alternative which will make all of us much more comfortable for the rest of mosquito season!

I have slowly been implementing going green in our home beginning with recycling however when my daughter who is now 17 months was diagnosed with eczema it quickly forced me to, what I call, get into the green gear. We changed our soap, food, makeup, etc. I must say it’s a work in progress and this is another item since it directly goes on my childrens’ skin.
