Natural Ant Killer
October 29th, 2008 Posted in Ants & Roaches
You’re cooking a pasta dish that smells amazing, and you just can’t wait until it’s time to sit down and eat it, and then all of a sudden…EW!
Nothing kills your appetite quicker than seeing ants making their way across your kitchen counters. They were definitely not invited to this dinner party. In the words of Stephanie Tanner (ala Full House), “How rude!”
You decide to wage war on these party crashers once and for all, safely and naturally.
This article will provide you with information about natural ant killers to aid in your home pest control, such as:
- Walnuts
- Grits
- Boric acid and sugar water
- Cucumber peels
- Diatomaceous earth
- Spices and chalk
- Anteaters
- White Vinegar
Option 1: Walnuts
Apparently, all it takes to get rid of your ant problems is whole walnuts. Walnuts placed in the shell around ant dwellings deter them because they don’t like the smell.
Pros:
- Easy and cheap
- Reusable for cooking purposes
Cons:
- You’re only repelling the ants, not killing them.
- Effectiveness isn’t proven.
- Can poison dogs, so they are not safe for households with poochy pets.
Option 2: Grits
For those of us not born in the deep south, grits consist of coarsely ground corn that is commonly cooked up in a porridge sort of manner and served as a breakfast dish.
Apparently, ants are also fans of grits. A sprinkling of uncooked grits around ant hills and wherever ants dwell will lead ants to eat it and then die as it expands in their stomach and kills them.
Pros:
- A pound of grits costs about $1.50.
- Grits make for a tasty breakfast food.
Cons:
- The mess. Do you really want sprinkled grits everywhere?
- It’s a duck killer! Ducks and geese cannot pass gas, so if they feast upon your ant bait, the grits expanding in their stomachs can kill them, much like the ants.
- There doesn’t seem to be any solid evidence that it actually works.
Option 3: Boric Acid and Sugar Water
Boric acid is a naturally occurring mineral-based ingredient that is poisonous to ants. Sugar water attracts them.
Mix the two together, and you have an instant ant killer!
Pros:
- Easy and cheap, once again. Are you seeing a pattern?
Cons:
- You have to make the perfect mixture. If it’s too weak, it won’t kill the ants.
- Boric acid be poisonous to humans and animals if ingested, so it’s certainly not entirely safe to be using.
- It takes up to 48 hours or more to kill the invading ants.
Option 4: Cucumber Peels
Ants hate the smell of cucumbers with a passion, apparently.
Leaving out cucumber peels or slices will keep them from coming your way.
Pros:
- They are really easy to find at a grocery store and relatively inexpensive.
- You can deter ants, make a salad, and give yourself a facial all at once.
- Nothing is more natural than a vegetable.
Cons:
- Once again, you’re not killing the ants, only repelling them.
- Leaving cut slices of cucumber out is not aesthetically appealing and after a few days? Gross.
Option 5: Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is essentially a dust made from dead algae.
Sprinkling DE where ants dwell will provide a relatively slow kill, as the dust works its way into the ant’s exoskeleton and essentially kills them by dehydration.
Pros:
- Won’t make too much of a dent in your wallet
- Widely used and proven to work
- Non-toxic
Cons:
- Not a quick-kill product.
- A white powder a.k.a. a mess waiting to happen.
- Can be difficult to find.
Also, it’s fairly abrasive. (Remember, it slices into ant exoskeletons.) So, breathing it in is not good for your lungs.
A face mask is recommended when working with it.
Option 6: Don’t Cross the Line!
Apparently, ants don’t like lines of certain things laid in their paths. What sort of things might you ask? Well.
Everything from:
- Cinnamon
- Turmeric
- Ground peppers of all kinds
- Chalk
- Salt (This is also used to keep evil spirits away. Get rid of ants and evil in one fell swoop!)
- Old coffee grinds
Pros:
Cons:
- Powders. Spices. Coffee Grinds. All over? = MESS
- None of this has been proven to work. There’s no scientific research that these things keep ants away for good.
- The line of your method of choice won’t kill your ants. It only sends them searching for other ways to get in.
Option 7: Anteaters
It’s all in the name. An anteater is a relative of the sloth that loves to chow down on ants. They’re the perfect natural ant killer!
Pros:
- Anteaters will track down ants in your house or yard and chow down. You don’t have to do anything!
- They will eat over 35,000 ants in a day. Problem solved!
Cons:
- They are very hard to find. Also, depending on your state’s exotic animal laws, they may be illegal.
- If you do attain one as a pet, they are difficult to care for.
- They’ll probably cost you around a cool five grand.
- Anteaters do not destroy ant colonies, because they prefer to come back later and feed on the same ant hill.
Option 8: White Vinegar
White vinegar is a fast and easy way to rid yourself of ants. Just fill up a spray bottle and spray directly on the offending ants and their paths.
Pros:
- In your local grocery store
- Non-toxic and safe to use around pets and kids
Cons:
- Vinegar stinks, especially when sprayed in large quantities from a spray bottle.
- This solution is only temporary, as the vinegar wears off in a few days and must be consistently re-applied to keep ants away.

Hey! I know that I would love to get rid of the pesky creatures! I have tried everything and still have a problem
By Mary Sizemore on Dec 30, 2008
My yard has more anthills than grass right now, I’d love to get rid of them naturally rather than chemically (which is why they’re still here, I won’t use chemicals).

You do not say whether the colony gets eliminated or just that the individual ants get eliminated. We want to avoid reoccurences.
By Jim on Apr 18, 2009
ANYTHING that will SAFELY and EFFECTIVELY rid me of my ants is a noooo-brainer….
By Stephanie on Apr 22, 2009
I am curious if this will work for us…. We have been doing pest treatments for the last year and I was told that the perimeter treatment isn’t really intended to get rid of the ants in my kitchen. Apparently they are Sugar Ants & Odor Ants. Nether are typically included in the general treatments that you can get. I think they actually like the Fabuloso cleaner that I have been using as they have been more prevalent since I started using it. I have tried the vinegar and it didn’t seem to make any difference…. They have started showing up in our bathrooms now too and I just can’t figure out where they are coming from.
By Dee on May 7, 2009
I have tried everything, grits, cinnamon, red pepper, ant spray, windex, none of it keeps them away. The only thing I’ve found of any help are those ant mound killers for the floor, however I have two dogs and a baby who can get ahold of them. I had been searching to find and eco friendly ant solution, but the stores don’t carry them. I would love to try this product.
By Ed on May 25, 2009
We’re using EcoSMART; it works but only if you spray directly on them. Krud Kutter spray cleaner works just as well if not better; at least they don’t go over the same spot after I’ve sprayed it.
I just went and got grits; we’ll see how that works. We don’t have ducks in San Diego so I don’t have to worry about them.
By Pat Meinke on May 26, 2009
This is a fabulous blog. We have been totally invaded by ants in our pantry. We have a 109 year old house, but that is no excuse. I have been trying to find natural ways of eliminating them as we have 6 senior rescue dogs. I am going to try some of these natural remedies, but would love to try the EcoSMART products.
Do your products work outside as well? We have alot of ants outside also. Any suggestions for carpenter bees also?
By Ken Lund on Jun 16, 2009
You think white vinegar smells, wait until to spray this around doors and windows on the exterior of the house. OMG! It is overwhelming and not in a pleasant way. I used both the ant and wasp spray. The ants seemed to rather enjoy it. The wasps just got mad and went after me.
It did not seem very effective and I do not believe I killed a single critter with it.
By Ken Lund on Jun 16, 2009
I do really appreciate the attempt to make a useful environmentally friendly product though. Don’t stop trying.
By Danielle Williams on Jun 19, 2009
We just moved into a house that has a bug problem due to poor cleaning by the previous tenants and our landlord suggested the typical sprays and chemicals. Instead, I have tried most of the “natural remedies” found online and unfortunately none of them seem to work well. The vinegar irritates them and if I spray it on them directly it does kill them but it is actually wearing away at my paint and they just come back the next day. We have used peppermint oil and bay leaves taped to their entry points, nothing happened. My husband caught ants doing “snow angels” in our Borax traps so that idea failed. I have tried cinammon and I can actually hear the little nuisances laughing at my futile attempts. Now, I think they have told the other insects what pushovers we are and every day a new variety shows up on our floors or counters to add to our feeling of hopelessness. I am pregnant and I have a 3-year-old son who is into everything and a lab that eats anything, chemicals are not an option. I use enviromentally friendly and chemically free cleaning supplies so I knew there had to be a pesticide out there with the same claim. Unfortunately, the stores I have been to look at me like I’m crazy when I ask for a safe way to get rid of the pests in my house. I heard about EcoSmart on the radio and I did an immediate search online. I hope to try EcoSmart as soon as possible and start showing the insects in our house that we are not the easy targets that they think we are.

I’m glad you’ve made an environmentally friendly product that’s will kill ants and not harm your yard. I read about using salt to kill ants and it worked great but ruins the grass where we put it. Should have tried your product first then I wouldn’t have brown patches in my yard. Oh well, I learned something anyway. Thanks for letting me share.
By Catie Shafer on Jul 9, 2009
I NEED to try this! We have ants that have found their way in, and they are driving me nuts. I was told to try borax and powdered sugar but it is still not working. With kids and pets I have to be careful with what I use. Either way I will probably be giving this stuff a try. Thanks!

I have several ant colonies on my yard that I am trying to get rid of. I have used powders but the ants just move to a different location. I have used corn meal (someone told me this would work) but a week later the colonies are thriving better than before. Please help!!
By Candace on Jul 13, 2009
I have tried the spray and it works. I wish I could get rid of the ants in my home for good though.
By Val Lang on Jul 14, 2009
I am into the “totally natural” options. these little creatures keep coming back if there is ONE crumb out anywhere in the house (sugar ants). I have tried the borax wall, but that was not as effective as just vacuuming them up (every single day, numerous times a day!) I want to try something else-not Ortho- yuck!
By Maryann Watkins on Jul 15, 2009
Ants, ants, ants! So far, the little critters aren’t in my house but they are ALL over my backyard. I’m desperate, having tried all the “natural” remedies from vinegar to boiling water to grits. I will NOT use anything toxic because of my dogs. Help!
By Shelina on Jul 16, 2009
This is so cool to have bug killer that won’t hurt my dog. She is very inquisitive and licks every thing- even Ants!!! I love that this will kill ants but not my dog.
By Delia Gonzales on Jul 22, 2009
I’m very excited and eager to try anything that is safe for indoors and out. You had me at “safe for pets and children”. But before I can get this EcoSMART, I am curious as hell to try out the grits! If it doesn’t work, I can always cook whats left.

Living in Phoenix, AZ, the ant problem never stops. Rather than make it my full-time job to kill the ants around our house, I’d love to use a product that is safe for people, animals, and the environment!

This is the first day I have used EcoSmart ant killer. The smell is not very pleasant. In fact it is overwhelming and is giving me a headache. Does anyone know how long it takes for the smell to go away?
By Kathy Lankford on Aug 24, 2009
I have many kinds of ants, sugar ants, fire ants, small red ants that sting like crazy, carpenter ants dropping in off the ceiling and also the cow ants.
I have sprayed, dusted, poured hot water on the mounds, yet I still have ants everywhere.
My little dog now chases them and eats them.
I’m not at all sure how safe that is for him with me spraying and dusting all around the outside of the house.
I need something nox toxic to animals since I have cats and dogs. Preferrably something that doesn’t have an offensive odor. I can’t vacate my house to have pest control come.
By Mr. Daniel Peru on Sep 1, 2009
I have a HUGE ant problem. The house I live in was built in the 1950’s and I have an infestation of ants from under the flooring in the bathroom, hall-way, and periodically my small office. The ants are CONSTANTLY in & on my bathtub as well as in long trails from 1 point to another along the entire linen closet. My mother whom I live with has severe COPD and requires 24 hr day oxygen; therefore I need something that is sympathetic to the needs of those with medical problems and that is non toxic to my pet as well. I have used salt and some bottled products from my local home building supply store. ANY and ALL help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.
By Charles Miller on Sep 5, 2009
I have an ant problem as well. They seem to come through cracks in the window panel and they form lines all across my walls. I do not want to try many of the products out on the market, I would love to try this product out.
By Sharon Fewell on Oct 25, 2009
I have had problems with roaches and ants since I moved into my house almost 2 yrs ago. I have had pest control guys out and they put stuff under the cabinets but the roaches are still here. They even come out and stay out in the daytime. I have ants all over the place outside that they decide to live in my truck. I am so tired of the battle. Maybe this stuff will actually do the trick.
By Sharon on Dec 10, 2009

would love to try. I do not want to have a professional terminator at my home, since I have cats kids etc. I have small home ants for over a few years now, so its about time!
By Trish on Mar 27, 2010
I’m all for the natural approach because I have a cat and a dog, but I was so upset by the ants in our basement right by the garage door that I sprayed a line of Clorox Cleanup around the trim by the floor and closed the door. I opened it a couple days later and they haven’t been back since. Weeks ago too. I had a few trying to enter our kitchen from a place in the trim by the floor and I again used Clorox Cleanup spray all along and part way under the trim right before bed. It spent the whole night drying and has again kept the ants away permanently. since I sprayed it right under the the board (between the linoleum and the trim) it didn’t have a huge chance to leak all over the floor causing issues. The area smelled like bleach for a day or so, but it was worth it for the ant problem. I saw one walking on my cat’s face this morning, and from where I don’t know!! They aren’t coming in from the 2 spots I cleared, so now I may have a new one. Need something natural and pet friendly………

Wow, what a great product! I have been looking for a natural ant killer for some time. Also, I am very impressed with the entire organic pesticide/herbicide product line. About time someone started making some without man-made, harmful chemicals that actually costs about the same as the other brands!

I just want to say I LOVE this product. Our house started to get taken over by the ants this spring and we didnt know what to do as we have small dogs and cats and didnt want to use anything that they might get into and hurt them. When I got to Home Depot and saw the EcoSmart Ant/Roach Spray I was unsure if it would really work but I thought it’s worth a try. Once we sprayed it, the ants were gone within 30 minutes, I couldnt believe it, that was 4-5weeks ago and they havnt return and our pets are SAFE! I highly recommend this product to anyone looking to use a safe organic pesticide.

Hey I was just searching for what variety of ant killing substances were out there. Have used the little ant traps but wanted to see what might be a non toxic or at least organic version to try. A few hills find there way to our lawn each year and this year my pile of planks for walking between the garden rows has been a new stomping grounds for the little buggers. If I am the 76th comment, would like to know if my trial will arrive for use this summer (like anytime as close to now as possible would be great…expedited, over night, jet-pack delivery…whatever method would be fine). Thanks again for the choices you seem to have to help get rid of those cute, tiny, delicate, NASTY ANTS!

Hey thanks for this. Ants are bad this year. I have teeny tiny ones and the big huge ones. I’ll have to look for your product but in the meantime I may use some grits. I have one lone Artichoke plant in my garden that was doing well and then I noticed the outer leaves at the base started to droop and there is like an anthill right there at the base of the plant. Some grits should do the trick.

This looks like a great alternative. My husband and I are in the process of buying a house and noticed that there are ants all over outside. I found this because we would like to be able to use a spray for ants and spiders that wont effect our puppy as she likes to stick her nose in everything we do. Hopefully I can find this product in a local store!

I’m currently trying to sell my home in Northville Michigan and I’m having an ant issue in my back yard. Like one of the previous posts says I have more ant hills than lawn at this point. It also seems like every time open a door to the outside they are just waiting to get in. I have tried the major name brand and it seems to work for a few weeks then it washes away and they’re back. I would love to try something natural.

We raise livestock for FFA and we have been infested twice now with ants getting into our Crimped barley for our heifer. We love to find out if we could get rid of the ants and save the barley. And can the fly repellent be used directly on animals?

We have three cats inside, and have had three cats dropped off outside. I’m looking for a safe way to get rid of pests that won’t hurt my kids or the cats.

We are full-time RVers, living/working in a campground in southeastern Illinois this summer. Have been invaded by tiny ants that apparently can fly! They do not have “trails”, they just seem to appear, 1 or 2 at a time, out of nowhere. And on any surface- the wall, the table, my arm, the computer screen, my glasses, etc. We have tried several “natural” remedies, with very limited success. My fear is they will go with us when we leave here. Help!

Hummmmmmmmm, Just by reading this blog I didn’t know that there are many other ways to either kill or deter ants. Here in Philly where it is really hot right now, it seems as though these ants want shelter in our home. It is so hard to get rid of them and perhaps going the natural route is in fact the best way.

Love EcoSMART, kills on contact. The only complaint is the very strong odor. Smells like cold medicine. While it is not a bad smell it is VERY STRONG even when spraying a small amount the strong odor lingers.

My family is under attack by Argentinian ants. They are biting us often and leave nasty welts. Our yard is planted in natives and attracts many birds, insects and animals that we do not want to poison trying to get rid of the ants. I would like to test your EcoSMART non chemical ant killer. It sounds like a good alternative.

We’ve been battling ants all summer. I hate the scents of the store bought toxic sprays and we have small kids and dogs. Can’t wait to try this product!

I am definitely interested in being a tester for your product. I have tried the boric acid bait on our small brown ants for about 2 weeks and it hasn’t made a dent yet. I’m increasing the strength of the bait, so we’ll see. Otherwise, I make my own mint-based spray to kill ants as needed, and I’m using cinnamon and vinegar to repel, but them keep coming back. I hope the boric acid will eventually do the trick, but I’m ready to try EcoSMART.

I have tried an “Eco” organic spray through a pest control company, and it did work on most bugs!!! It has been several months since the application, and we now have an ant problem in our bathroom. The pest control company was bought out by another company that does not carry the safe non-harsh spray option. I like vinegar. It does deter them. I understand that we need to kill the queen. I can try the tips of pepper, cucumber, etc. If EcoSmart can get to the root of the problem, I will be a dedicated, loyal and very verbal fan!

Ants on the kitchen counter are driving me crazy. I need a product that is safe to use in the kitchen. Can your product help me?

I’m intrigued. Is there any access to the results of the tests conducted?

I have a number of BIG BLACK ANT colonies in my yard and garden. A number of these reside at the edge of my sidewalk, burrowing back towards the house. I have tried numerous methods of eliminating these ant colonies, all to no avail. Our dog’s are always getting bit on the feet by these ant’s, and I would really like a non-toxic method of getting rid of them.
Thanks

Is this product harmful to snakes? I have a pet snake and snakes are sensitive to odors. I have an ant problem and am looking for an insecticide that is safe around reptiles. I can’t find this information anywhere on your site, or the can.

Bought the house about 12 years ago. Ants in one corner of the kitchen- so caulked the hole. Used pesticide back then and it essentially controlled them for a while. Tried the Taro baits as well- no fun watching tons of ants feast and me having no idea whether it is actually working or if they are just getting fed. No longer will use harsh chemicals- would have loved if this site had posted peoples actual response to their use of the product- Would like to try EcoSMART products if they work as advertised with only natural non-toxic ingredients. My 11 month old crawler son has struck up a friendship with some of the ants- not my idea of a healthy play date- call me old-fashioned but really?

I live in Texas and ants are a problem around here. I’m having a hard time getting rid of them, especially since the chemical-based ant killers are cat killers, too.

You must be very careful when using the chemicals. I would give this product a go. It seems to do the trick.
