Top Organic Green Products
October 29th, 2008 Posted in Organic & Chemical Pesticides
Society today is more focused on green living than it ever has been before. The old term “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” has taken on an all new meaning in the 21st century. But I bet you didn’t know there were so many “green” household products out there that could help you live in a healthier more sustainable world.
This article discusses very useful “green” household products that will change the way you look at green living, including:
- Makeup
- Lighting
- Pet food
- Air purifiers
- Apparel
- Water filters
- Household cleaners
- Recycled paper
- Bedding
- EcoSMART Organic Insecticides

Makeup
Yes, ladies, you can buy organic makeup! I never realized many of the products I put on my face have not been tested for safety, and some of the ingredients have negative side effects. Petroleum-based make ups, which are very popular, deplete a non-renewable resource and can cause allergic reactions.
The EPA determined that phenol, a common ingredient in lip balms, can cause diarrhea, fainting, dizziness, and kidney and liver damage when consumed in high concentrations. Check out Perfect Organics Vegan Lip and Cheek Shimmer. One consumer said it feels great on and provides beautiful color.
Lighting
Changing your lighting is a very simple way to be more energy efficient. Compact fluorescent bulbs are more energy efficient than incandescents. They may take more energy to produce, but they save more than that over their lifespan in addition to saving greenhouse gases. Many consumers believe they provide a better color of light as well.
Sylvania makes a very cool 13 watt 120 volt CPL minitwist bulb that is easy to install and can help you save on your electric bill. You just have to remember that one major difference between CPL’s and incandescents is that CPL’s contain mercury which can be harmful to the environment. So make sure that you dispose of them properly.

Pet Food
Have you ever really thought about what’s in Snoopy’s dog dish? Many pet foods contain what is classified as 4D meats by the USDA. 4D meats are not considered fit for consumption, because the animals were either dead, dying, diseased or disabled at the time of inspection.
Newman’s Own Organics makes pet food that does not contain 4D meats, antibiotics, hormones, chemical ingredients or artificial preservatives, colors, or additives. Newman’s Own Organics contains certified organic vegetables and grains and meets the nutritional levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). Check out their Advanced Dry Dog Formula. Who knew the salad dressing guys made pet food too!?
Air Purifier
The EPA reports that people spend 90% of their time indoors, and air in some homes can be more polluted than the air in industrialized cities. The EPA recommends source control, ventilation improvements, and air cleaners to improve the quality of air in your home.
HEPA and electrostatic air purifiers are good for people with allergies and asthma. In addition to keeping your windows and doors open, you could try Honeywell’s Permanent HEPA-type Table Top Air Purifier. I can’t think of any product that has been more helpful with my allergies than my air purifier. This Honeywell product doesn’t even need filters which will save you money compared to other products.

Apparel
What better way to live a greener life than to wear it on your back? Organic cotton grown without petroleum-based pesticides and fertilizers helps replenish and maintain soil fertility, while building a diverse agriculture.
If you are not able to find a brand that sells only organic clothes, you can probably find a section of your favorite company that focuses on the use of organic materials in addition to their other products. For example, American Apparel has a sustainable edition which features items like their Certified Cotton, Organic V-Neck. These item have minimal shrinking and color fastness and come in really great colors.
Water Filters
Who said you can’t be green on a budget? There are many products out there that help the environment and your pockets, like water filters, which are less expensive than buying bottled water.
Toxic chemicals can be released during the manufacture and disposal of bottles, and if you don’t recycle they will spend forever in a landfill. I never knew that the bottled water many Americans consume is allowed to contain higher levels of toxic chemicals associated with birth defects and cancer than tap water.
The Brita Atlantis Pitcher looks great and and produces great tasting water.
Household Cleaners
You really don’t need abrasive chemicals to scrub the grease off your stove’s burners or to polish your hallway floors. There are many different recipes available for cleaning products that contain simple ingredients you can find in your local grocery store or even in your kitchen cabinet.
Popular mixtures of baking soda, vinegar, hot water and natural oils can cut grease and polish just as well, if not better, than store-bought brands.
But if you’re not in the mood to make the mix yourself, check out Simple Green’s All Purpose Cleaner. This product is biodegrable, non-flammable, non-abrasive, non-toxic, contains no petroleum, and comes in recyclable packaging. It doesn’t even have ammonia or bleach, which are highly toxic and dangerous for the environment. You can even buy it in a great lemon scent.

Recycled Paper
Something as simple as recycling paper makes a huge difference. Only 20% of the world’s office paper is recycled. That means you can make an effort to see to it that the other 80% gets recycled, also.
Besides things like using scrap paper to take notes and not printing more from the computer than what you need, you can buy recycled paper too. Don’t believe what people tell you when you hear recycled paper is brown and dingy, because Office Depot sells Green™ 100% Recycled EnviroCopy™ Paper which is a brilliant white with a nice feel and weight to it, according to consumers.
Recycling paper sequesters the heavy metal and inks on paper and keep them out of the environment; it also saves water, energy and space in landfills, while generating fewer greenhouse gases compared to the manufacturing of brand new paper.
Bedding
Organic cottons and wools are grown with methods that have a low impact on the environment. They are grown without pesticides and promote farming techniques that encourage fertile soil by not using petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
Sleep green in organic sheets featured at Target.
EcoSMART Organic Insecticides
Keep your home free of harmful chemicals by going green with organic home pest control, using these organic and non-toxic insecticides (Ant & Roach Killer, Flying Insect Killer, Wasp & Hornet Killer, Skin Repellent). They do not leave chemical residue around your home that can be potentially harmful to your children, pets, and family members.
The pros use EcoSMART:
EcoSMART’s line of organic insecticides is based on the natural defenses that plants and trees use for their self-protection against insects and pathogens. These botanical formulas for killing pesky ants, roaches, wasps, and other insects use plant oils and inert ingredients that are classified as “Generally Recogized as Safe” (GRAS) bu the USDA. This is the same classification as the food you eat everyday.
In addition to being biodegradable, EcoSMART’s plant oils will not build up in the environment and will not contaminate water. It even smells great. Try EcoSMART products so you can freshen the air while you rid your home of unwanted creatures.
No one said you can’t go green and have fun with it too. Hope you enjoy all these great products!

I’m so pleased with the Eco-SMART products that we have standardized on them. I have their logo on my trucks, letterhead, biz cards, and web site. We use their products for general pest control, fleas, bed bugs, ants, German roaches, and much more. My customer’s love the safety, the effectiveness, and even the smell. I use it around our termite sniffing dog without fear. Keep up the great work guys!
