What Is That Smell?!

December 15th, 2008 Posted in Organic & Chemical Pesticides

Because it’s organic and uses natural plant oils as the active ingredients, EcoSMART’s line of insecticides have a fragrance. This may be a concern to some people who typically associate an insecticide odor with toxicity.

This article discusses EcoSMART’s plant oil ingredients, their fragrances, and their uses to show there is no need to worry and that EcoSMART is a safe, organic solution to bug problems, and a great way to avoid a bug bomb.

The active ingredients used in EcoSMART products include:

  • Peppermint oil
  • Cinnamon oil
  • Rosemary oil
  • Sesame oil
  • 2-Phenethyl Propionate

The plant oil inert ingredients (or the “not so active” ingredients) include:

  • Wintergreen oil
  • Vanillin

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil has been used for thousands of years; evidence of its usage was found in Egypt in a tomb from 1000 BC.

It is extracted from the peppermint plant just before it flowers. This oil can remedy asthma, colic, exhaustion, fever, flatulence, headache, scabies, sinusitis, and vertigo.

Other uses (when diluted or in small doses):

  • Slows the digestive system
  • Relieves nausea
  • Treats bad breath
  • Get rid of rodents

Fragrance:

  • Minty
  • Like a candy cane, but stronger

Cinnamon Oil

Extracted from bark and leaves of a cinnamon tree, cinnamon oil has a warming effect. It can be combined with massage or Jojoba oil to relax muscles and help circulation.

Other uses:

  • Apply on a wet, warm washcloth for a facial
  • Use as a mouthwash by diluting with water
  • Add to a bubble bath for added relaxation
  • Put in potpourri
  • Repels mosquitoes

Fragrance:

  • Sweet-spicy
  • Peppery

Rosemary Oil

Distilled from Rosmarinus officinalis, Rosemary Oil is great for massages and stimulates the central nervous system.

Other uses:

  • Stimulates the scalp and controls dandruff
  • Aids in healthy hair growth
  • Uplifts mood
  • Enhances memory when diffused with juniper berry or frankincense
  • Alleviates cold systems and loosens chest congestion
  • Aids in memorization and concentration

Fragrance:

  • Fresh
  • Clear
  • Pine-like, but sweeter

Sesame Oil

Sesame oil comes from sesame seeds by pressing. Sesame seeds are usually cultivated in the East Indies. What are some ways it is used? “Open Sesame!” and EcoSMART to get a whiff!
Uses:

  • Used in margarine, halvah and confectionary products
  • Add to marinades and salad dressings
  • Stimulates brain activity
  • May contain antioxidants

Sesame oil may treat:

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Blemishes
  • Stress
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Aching muscles
  • Blurred vision
  • Toothaches

Fragrance:

  • Nutty
  • Sweet

2-Phenethyl Propionate

2-Phenethyl Proprionate is a derivative of peanut oil, but doesn’t contain the enzyme that creates allergic reactions. It is an ester of phenethyl alcohol and propionic acid, hence its name. Ester means condensation of alcohol and acid, which basically synthesizes the two into one compound.

Phenethyl alcohol

  • Found in nature, such as in apples, bananas, and roses
  • Used in perfumes, soaps, and other products such as hair spray
  • Odor: Floral and medium in strength

Propionic acid

  • Used in feed and food industry
  • Found in pharmaceuticals, antifungal agents, agrochemicals, plastics, plasticizers, rubber chemicals, and dyes
  • Odor: Slightly sweetish

Fragrance of 2-Phenethyl Propionate:

  • Practically odorless

Wintergreen Oil

From western Nepal, Wintergreen oils revitalize and relieves muscular pains. It is extracted from leaves of Gaultheria.

Other uses:

  • Flavors soft drinks
  • Used in pharmaceuticals and perfumes
  • Acts as an antiseptic, a diuretic, stimulant, and anti-rheumatic

Fragrance:

  • Creamy-fruity topnote
  • Sweet-woody

Vanillin

Vanillin is one of over two hundred organic compounds that make the flavor and aroma of vanilla. Vanillin crystals sometimes develop on vanilla bean surfaces.

Uses:
Sometimes used in cake, cool drinks, chocolate, candy, crackers, instant noodles, bread, tobacco, wine, toothpaste, and perfume.

Fragrance:

  • Like vanilla
  • Milky

Oh My if this really smells of all these herbs.I will absolutely love it!!! The insecticides I have used before stink to high heaven and that’s one of the reasons I can’t stand spraying them,.They are horrible. I would welcome and decent smell for change. I really want to try this product and smell for myself.

We learned about your products from one of our clients who is chemically sensitive. She says you have allowed her to “retake” her kitchen from the creepy crawlies that like to invade her home seasonally. I personally would never use a poisonous chemical in my home and Eco-Smart came to the rescue when a neighbor’s wasp problem became my wasp problem. Problem solved! We recommend this product to all our clients. Phenolic compounds can be beneficial for respiratory congestion and they are anti-microbial and anti-fungal as well. That sounds like a win-win to me.

Every summer I have a bug guy come out and spray. I hate the smell and am always afraid of inhaling the stuff. It’s so toxic and I worry about my kids and dog.
Your product sounds like a great alternative.
Can’t wait to try.If I like I will pass the word on to my friends and coworkers, especially those who’s kids have asthma.

  18. By Dawn on Dec 16, 2008

Wow.. almost sounds like it could be a air freshener. I cannot stand the smell of pesticides, besides I would rather have something that is environmentally save.

  19. By Wendy on Dec 16, 2008

I do not like the smell of pesticides. I have
kids and pets and do not like what is in
those things you can buy or have someone put
on. I cannot wait to try this. The flies in my house are driving us crazy because we do not want to use chemicals in our house . We
tried a fly trap which did nothing. We still
    have them .

  20. By Brenda on Dec 16, 2008

Wow, I’d like to try this product!!

  21. By Danielle Crawford on Dec 16, 2008

I really think this is a neat product. I am just beginning on a journey to improve my impact on the earth and do better for my family thru organic and all natural products. This sounds like a product that would fit this criteria perfectly. I would love to try some and discover a better way to control the awful house pests like fruit flies and stuff that plague my home because I refuse to use pestiside.

  22. By Judy on Dec 16, 2008

I would LOVE to have a natural product that worked AND smelled great. I have a company that sprays outside every few months but I NEVER have the inside done. I sure would love to get rid of them. The small is awful and I’m sure we track some in the house off our shoes. It’s time for us all to do whatever we can to help our earth – - not to mention our own health – - by ridding ourselves of all the chemicals we use. I’m anxious to try this EcoSmart product and get rid of the pests that invade our home!

  23. By Yvonne on Dec 16, 2008

I have now switched all my housecleaning products including laundry over to green nontoxic cleaners to help the environment and our family and pets’ health.

I hate to kill things just because I happen to think they are creepy so I bought a contraption that sucks them up safely a distance from ME and then my husband lets them go. That is my “green” and compassionate bug protection. lol

But for those who need a spray this sounds PERFECT

  24. By Patty on Dec 17, 2008

I am so excited to try this product. Knowing it is safe to use is such a relief. All of the scents sound great, especially the cinnamon and vanilla.

  25. By Richard Graham on Dec 17, 2008

I am checking into this product because we have a new puppy (no pets before). Caesar has already become part of the family. My concern now is to protect him. We have a contract with a pest control company. This has been slightly effective in controlling our ant & spider problems. But, I would like to find a safer more environmentally way of controlling these problems. We occasionally get a few German roaches that pop in uninvited. This is usually when someone moves out of one of the older homes around us.

  26. By Elizabeth M. on Dec 17, 2008

I love the addition of peppermint to the products!

  27. By Stephanie on Dec 17, 2008

I am becoming an environmental aware person. One by one, I am changing the things that I am buying to not only help my househould, but protect the world.

This would be one thing that would be great for my house, and environmentally friendly as well.

  28. By Carmen on Dec 17, 2008

This is just what I’ve been looking for. Something safe to use around the kids and pets and without that aweful chemical smell. Go green!

  29. By Eva on Dec 17, 2008

I would feel so much better using a product like this around my child and pets rather than the harsh stinky stuff that I can find at the hardware store.

  30. By Jill on Dec 17, 2008

    Thanks for the information

  31. By Jodi on Dec 17, 2008

I love the idea of a safe pesticide. It’s great to hear so many good things about the product from customers too!

  32. By Lisa on Dec 17, 2008

The scents sound like a huge benefit of this product as well as the safety. I have a 3 and 5 year old as well as a new puppy. I’m bvery concerned when our Pest Control Company sprays the interior of my home and would be interested in a product that is safe for my children and dog to be around.

  33. By Patti Williams on Dec 17, 2008

It would be great to try a pesticide that didnt smell so bad you had to leave home after using it.I am happy to see there is a natural product choice.

  36. By Buddy on Dec 17, 2008

This sounds like a great product!

  37. By Matt Hitchcock on Dec 17, 2008

I am SO anxious to try your product. I would especially like to try the one best at controlling ants. In AZ we have an ant problem. Twice a year whole colonies invade our homes so we need something that can be used inside and out at the same time. I am very impressed that your product can be used this way, has no toxic smell, and is safe around children and pets. Thanks for the opportunity to give it a try first. If it works as well as you say you have a customer for life…i can promise you that!

  38. By E. Allen on Dec 17, 2008

It would be nice to get rid of pests without causing allergies to flare because of offensive-smelling sprays.

I can’t wait to try these products out. I have heard great things about them. I have animals but I also have lots of BUGS of different varieties. I moved from Ohio to South Carolina 3 years ago and there are some HUGE bugs here! I have had to use non organic pesticides and I worry about my animals safety as well as my own. I just heard about your products and hope you will pick me to try out them out. I just signed up with your website so that I would be considered for that program.

    Keep up the important work.

By the way if I am not picked can you tell me how and where to buy them?

    thanks!

After 17 years of being told I could never, I was a mother again at 34.. I have a 2, 18, and 20 year old. I am doing everything different with this wee one than I am with the older two. I do not like toxic chemicals and pesticides I even have changed the way we eat and my daughter whose 2 and is very active has NEVER yet been sick (knock on wood). I am a clean freak and still, moving in to a house for the first time educated me on the fact that I was still going to have insects/bugs/nasties no matter what I did. I do not spray or put out baits or traps due to pesticides and the worry of my wee one getting into them. I would LOVE to try these products out!

  62. By Clarissa on Dec 20, 2008

The ingredients in this product are such a relief to me. I have long searched for products that I knew were safe to use around my children and pets. These products are a dream come true and I cannot wait to purchase them!

  63. By Kim Mowery on Dec 21, 2008

I can’t stand using all those toxic bug sprays and I have been looking for a product like EcoSmart for years. The smell of those other sprays are enough to make a person very sick or worse. Honestly, I’d rather put up with the bugs than to have to smell all those toxic chemicals.
EcoSmart sounds like it would be a refreshing alternative. I hope I get the chance to sample and experience a bug-free home with the pleasant scent of EcoSmart.
    Thanks so much!!

  64. By Megan on Dec 21, 2008

WOW! Finally a bug killer I can use around my Parrots and dogs! I’m dying to try it out and see how well it works. In NC the fleas are horrible and Peppermint oil is one of the best ways to kill them. So this combo sounds perfect to me. No more spreading dry peppermint leaves around the house, walking them into the carpets and having to wait 3-5 days to vacuum. And one that smells good is a winner too!

I have a problem with earwigs in my vegetable garden, and with tiny insects in the house that we call no-see-ems. I’m looking for a product that I can use directly on the vegetables.

  82. By Lisa on May 15, 2009

NOTE: these do not smell “good!” The smell is overpowering and extremely pungent. USE PRODUCT SPARINGLY! The oils must make the smell linger. I purchased EcoSmart because I have a puppy, and I am pregnant. I had to spray this morning for ants in my kitchen (a recurring problem), and the smell was overwhelming. However, I cleaned up the ants and the spray and went about my day. 4 hours later, I began to feel head-achy and ill. I laid down on the sofa for a couple of hours and just didn’t feel well. (I’m in my 3rd trimester and am not prone to feeling ill at this point.) My husband came home 6 hours after I sprayed, and the first thing he did was open up all of the windows to air the home out. I began to feel better with the fresh air circulating.

I found this webpage while looking online to see if anyone has had a similar experience. I have not found a reference, but I think people should know. I did not fumugate my home. I sprayed an area about three ft long. That’s it.

It’s good to know that the smell is not toxic; however, overwhelmingly powerful smells from oils CAN cause a reaction — and DO. ALSO, NO, THERE is nothing about this product that makes it an air freshner either.

  85. By Lisa on Oct 17, 2009

I am very anxious to try this product! It sounds like the scent should be refreshing. Certainly getting spiders and other pests under control in and around the house in a nontoxic manner is ideal!

I had a rash which I believed to be yeast. The Doctor prescribed medicine. The yeast cleared but the itching remained. My husband started to itch on the arm closest to me while we sleep, then itched between his fingers. Convinced it was scabies I decided to spray my body down from chest to feet…Instant relieve* I never felt so good…it got a lil warm but cool water relieved that.

  87. By cookie on Jan 14, 2010

i work in the garden department of a big box retailer. we are just starting to get the products in. would love to try them out in my house and organic garden so that i can make comments and recommendations.

  88. By Amy on Apr 3, 2011

I love the idea of an organic bug spray. So I bought a bottle at Home Depot earlier today. We sprayed it outside and inside of two doors in our house (which is where the bugs like to come in). It is now 4am and I haven’t slept a wink. The smell, while not necessarily unpleasant, is so strong and overwhelming that I’m now feeling ill… headache, sick to my stomach, my whole being is irritated. We have the windows open, all the fans on, etc. Its not really helping the matter. So I have to strongly caution people… if you’re the least bit sensitive to smells, USE SPARINGLY!!!! I’ll be taking my bottle and receipt back to the store tomorrow and ask for a refund. This product is not going to work for me, personally. Bummer. I’m disappointed.

  89. By Donna on May 3, 2011

I agree with the previous poster about the smell–it is so OVERWHELMING. It lasts for days and days even if you just use a quick spritz. I had to open all the windows (in 40 degree temps) and mop multiple times just so I could breathe.

On the bright side, it kills bugs dead. I just can’t stomach the smell. Too bad.

  90. By Mommy3 on Jul 4, 2011

Woah!!!! This expanded stuff smells soooooo bad! It smells stronger than vicks vapo rub and is making me sick to my stomach.

  91. By Scott on Jul 4, 2011

WARNING! The odor of this spray is far worse than ANY chemical! It causes severe headaches and nose bleeds! DO NOT USE! We cannot get the stench of it out of our home 3 days after spraying a small amount in one room.

  92. By Michelle on Jul 14, 2011

The smell is horrible! I used this morning in a very small amount and within 5 min I had the worst migraine headache ever. I am very sensitive to smells and had I known I would have NEVER bought this product. 10 hours later my apartment still smells terrible. I have tried everything to get rid of the intense smell, opened all windows in 100 degree weather, turned every fan on in the house, sprayed vinegar and wiped down the areas sprayed-NOTHING is changing. DO NOT BUY this product it is horrible for people that are sensitive to smells, one day people will understand how truly painful strong smells can be to people and the toll they can take on their daily life. This is ridiculus and an extremely overpowering smell.

I used Ecosmart in my shed for multiple hornets nests. It worked instantly and perfectly. Very glad there is a non toxic product now offered.

For the people complaining about the smell in the house – the bottle I purchased says not to use indoors, the pure peppermint oil which kills the bugs is non toxic but very strong scent by nature. I would not spray regular old toxic spay in the house either, but I thought that’s common sense.
