We have gnat problems due to 4 huge chicken houses next door. For a few days the wind blew from the direction of the houses and we were swamped with gnats outside and in. We did everything suggested here and still fighting gnats. Then we noticed they were coming in through our vents. Seems the outdoor unit is sucking them into the house. We put some filters on the vents but it makes it harder on the unit. We're afraid it will hurt the unit trying to force air through the filters. Can anyone tell us what we can do to keep them from coming in through the unit outside that won't harm the unit?

Glad I too found this site. I have been plagued by gnats ever since bringing home house plants from Lowes.I thought I would go crazy. Never had this problem before. Then purchased brand name potting soil only to find these things flying out of the bag when I opened it. I have been potting plants for 42 years and never seen anything like it.The soil is so different from what it used to be.It is not pure rich black dirt like it used to be.It is almost like a fine mulch(my sister noticed this also). This in my opinion would be like decaying matter. Well anyway you have to realize the gnats will lay their eggs in the soil and hatch. They actually get in the roots of the plants.A systemic house plant insect control by Bonide (purchased at Ace HDW) will clear the problem up with the houseplants.I still get a few but the source must be outside as they are everywhere outside and it is not from having ungroomed yard. I just think people are plagued with them for reasons unknown and we will just have to keep battling away. Our eco system is deteriorating.I may try the EcoSmart. Also I have had the little tiny bugs DiAnn White talked about. They are in the bathroom. No matter what I do we cannot get rid of them.I have pest control spray twice and we still have them. will keep fighting. Hope someone has an answer.

I am so thankful that I took the time to look this up. I just knew I was losing my mind, when it came to gnats. I have three plants that I have repotted because of these nasty little creatures, and once again...They are back. They drive me crazy, and after reading others posts, I now know that my mind is fully intact, and I am not the only one in life they tried to make go mental. The human race will conquer these little annoying buggers! =)

My husband mowed our lawn and with in days there are thousands of gnat like bugs that started comng through our window screen... I instantly bought some spray and did the house exterior and noticed there were probably millions. I also noticed there is that little square box under my window that has the water gauge or something. I vaccumed and cleaned our room, shut all the windows and turned on the AC instead, but they are still somehow getting in and i mean a lot of them... I am gonna try the vinigar/soap today but i need some help... any ideas?

My moms kitchen and dining room are infested with gnats. We have set up the little traps of bowls with vinegar, and they work. We've trapped hundreds of them, but...how do we get rid of them for good? We live in AZ and cannot put my moms plants outside, she won't part with them. I'm pretty sure this is where they are coming from, though I can't tell which plant. I was looking for something safe to spray on the plants to kill the eggs.

We have a gnat or drain fly infestation problem in our apartment. The kitchen sink was leaking for awhile and the landlord did not fix it properly. We seem to have finally stoped the leaking from the pipe under the sink but now there seem to be hundreds of gnats or small drain files hanging out in the kitchen, and moving to other areas of the house. I think they are coming from the kitchen sink. I have tried pouring bleach and boiling water down the kitchen sink but this seems only to alleviate the problem for several hours. I am at my wits end in how to solve this pest problem. Our landlord is uncooperative. What do you suggest?
