Wolf Spiders

June 26th, 2009 Posted in Spiders & Other Arachnids

The name alone is intimidating, and most people who see these creepy arachnids are given quite a fright.

They’re big, hairy, and often seen toting hundreds of little baby wolf spiders on their backs–not exactly something you want hanging around your house. But let’s get more specific; what exactly is a wolf spider (besides scary looking)?

Wolf Spider Breakdown

Wolf spiders are members of the family Lycosidae, which is the Greek word for wolf. There are over 2000 different kinds of wolf spiders in the world and at least 200 kinds in the United States alone, making it likely that you’ll run into one in your lifetime. Wolf spiders are generally pretty large. On average they are at least 1/2 in. long, but plenty of wolf spiders grow over the 1 in. mark. They range in color from gray to brown with black striped patterning on their back.

The majority of wolf spiders are hunters rather than web builders. Rather than trapping bugs in webs like most of their spider brethren, wolf spiders stalk their prey and attack them with their agile speed….like a wolf! Certain types of wolf spiders create their own burrows to hide in and ambush unsuspecting bug victims, while others seek shelter under rocks and logs. Wolf spiders enjoy nighttime hunting because their eyes have adapted to allow them to see easily in the dark. If you shine a flashlight across the grass one night you may be able to spot one, as their eyes will reflect the shine with a blue-green tint.

Female wolf spiders use their webs to lay their eggs in. They then roll the webbing into a ball. After that, they attach the egg-filled web to their spinnerets and carry it around with them like some sort of bizarre baby spider backpack. When the babies have hatched, they then climb up onto their mother’s abdominal area and hitch a ride for awhile until they are ready to go out on their own. The sight of tons of little spider babies crawling all over their mother’s back is one you won’t soon forget.

Spider Myths: Don’t cry wolf.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the wolf spider. Are they poisonous? Overly aggressive? Evil blood-sucking fiends?

In truth, wolf spiders do inject venom if they bite you. However, the reaction to a wolf spider bite is mild with redness, itching, or swelling at the bite site. Certain types of wolf spiders may have a more painful bite, but wolf spiders are considered fairly harmless in general. There are a few South American and Australian wolf spiders that have been rumored to have a nasty and serious bite, but most research looking into these rumors proves those tales to be false.

In addition, the wolf spider is very similar in appearance to the much more dangerous brown recluse spider, and they are often mixed up. Keep this in mind if you think you are dealing with a relatively benign wolf spider, as a bite from a brown recluse can be extremely painful.

Wolf spiders are also not generally aggressive. They are fairly quick and shy, so any approach by a human may lead to a mad getaway dash that could be mistaken for aggressive movement. Keep in mind they hunt bugs, not humans. Chances are they aren’t coming after you.

Be SMART when you’re around a wolf spider as a general rule. If provoked, they can bite. It won’t be fun, so just don’t try touching them or picking them up and you’ll be fine.

Getting Rid of Wolf Spiders

You want to keep out the wolfy invaders. What do you do?

Prevention

The first step for keeping wolf spiders out is to prevent them from getting in in the first place. Here are some quick steps you can take to stop invasions from happening:

  • Seal all outdoor openings like cracks and holes to cover potential spider entrances.
  • Put screens over any household vents.
  • Keep other household pests controlled. Besides being a pest for you, they’re just food for the spiders.
  • Dismantle any cardboard or wood piles where spiders could hide. Just be aware of spiders that may already be inhabiting such places during cleanup.
  • Try to dry out any moist or dampened areas like basements.
  • Keep outside light usage to a minimum. Lights attract other bugs, which in turn attract spiders.

Wolf Spider Control

It’s too late for prevention. The wolf spiders have invaded your home and are out to make themselves cozy. What now?

You could go with a synthetic chemical bug spray to get rid of them. However, do you really want to breathe in noxious and potentially harmful fumes as you spray in your house? Make sure the pets and kids are cleared out? Let’s hope you’re going to say no…

So, what do you use to get rid of spiders safely and effectively?

EcoSMART: The SMART Product to Use

EcoSMART makes organic pesticides for bug control. It’s made with all natural ingredients like peppermint and wintergreen oils. This means it’s safe to use in your house and around your family and pets. In fact, EcoSMART is labeled as ‘GRAS,’ or generally recognized as safe, by the FDA. There are no dangerous chemicals to breathe in and it even leaves a pleasant minty smell behind.

There are two EcoSMART products recommended for taking care of your wolf spider problems.

EcoSMART Ant and Roach Killer: This is a great way to get rid of spiders that have already found their way into your home. It can also be used on any other bugs you find crawling around that may be attracting the spiders.

EcoSMART Wasp and Hornet Spray: This product should be used on spiders that you find outside or in non-occupied areas of your house like your attic, garage, or basement. It has a jet spray that reaches up to eighteen feet, so it’s great to use on those spiders that have taken refuge in places that are too high to reach.

I am so glad to have found this website. I have a soon to be teen step son, and three small girls of my own, and we are covered in wolf spiders, and I have been trying to find a safe and effective way to get rid of them, and I’m so glad this site, not only tells you what and how to prevent and get rid of them but educates you on the spider itself and its reasons and colors and habits.
    Thanks again

Thanks for the info. We have been inundated with wolf spiders. I think the mulch we spread is attracting them. I am definitely not going to pull up all of the mulch, so it sounds like I need a pest control product like EcoSMART. Also, thanks for including pictures to help with identifying spiders.

I’m always looking to cut back the chemicals my family is exposed to. My husband is a pastor and we would like to try this out in our home and our church.

I’d love to try this product! It seems that the wolf spiders that usually show up in the fall are here extra early this year! They are all over our deck, and in plants in the yard. I’d love a way to get rid of them naturally, as not to harm my dogs or kids.

    thanks!

However, the one thing that scares my family the most is the spiders! I just hate seeing them in our house.

  33. By Dick Cain on Jul 12, 2009

We have what we believe to be a wolf spider (as confidently identified by our 10-year old grandson) that has taken up residence just outside our front door, living in the “open” on our cedar siding. Our front door area is a haven for bugs of all types since we have to keep our light on for safety (vandals, etc.). Not familiar with EcoSMART but would be very interested in testing it.

  34. By Melissa on Jul 12, 2009

I’m so glad I found this website! The detailed information about wolf spiders is very helpful.

I live next to several wooded lots and we have these spiders EVERYWHERE. Just this morning, I went to refill the large bowl of water I leave out for birds to drink and there were three wolf spiders swimming in it! Argh!

I’m looking forward to finding a safe, organic way to control these pests.

  35. By Susan on Jul 12, 2009

I liked getting the information on Wolf spiders. I have a phobia about spiders, and would like to get them out of my house. I also have pets though, so EcoSMART may be a viable solution!

  36. By Al Gmutza on Jul 12, 2009

I found your website while trying to identify what seemed like the biggest spider I had ever seen. Turns out it was a wolf spider carrying her children on her back. My wife hates spiders. Looks like we’ll need EcoSMART to keep all those babies from coming inside!

    Thanks

  37. By Lloyd on Jul 13, 2009

Thanks for the info! The wolf spider that my cats just chased around the living room gave the wife quite a fright. It’s nice to know they aren’t really poisonous enough to worry about, but needless to say we don’t really want any more hanging around.

  38. By Amber on Jul 13, 2009

YIKES! my basement is full of these guys & I hate it. Just last week DH got a nasty bite from one of these guys when out trimming in the yard. YUCK! Thanks for all the info though.

I have had three of these huge spiders in my home in the past two weeks. I have the creeps so badly that I won’t put my feet on the floor while sitting on the couch. I am not happy with these home invasions!!

  40. By Jerry Chan on Jul 14, 2009

I have many indoor plants at home therefore I have insects in my home. Since I have pets and small childrens and these are not very poisonous this will be perfect to use around the house with small childrens and pets.

  41. By Henry Mang on Jul 14, 2009

I would be interested to see how effective this pesticide is at killing insects and spiders. Although I must say i really don’t have much of a problem with spiders as they tend to keep other insects at bay. I guess if i had a severe infestation I would try to eliminate them. I do have a few of these guys in an around my house and wouldn’t mind getting rid of them or at least seeing how this product works on them.

  45. By LuDell Hutchings on Jul 16, 2009

I just returned home from work and was relaxing in the recliner. I felt something crawling on me leg. As I was wearing shorts, I looked down and saw the largest spider, outside of a trantula, that I have ever seen. My daughter took a picture of it and was very excited. The body was well over the 1 inch mark. Most sprays have to come in direct contact with spiders to have any effect. Is this the same with EcoSmart? I would like to try it.

We have lots of these spiders all the time mostly in my little girls room the kids bathroom and I see them all the time while I pull weeds in the back yard next to the house where it is usaully cool and damp. We live in Amarillo, TX……I loved your details on this spider, and hope this spray works well for the sake of my freaked out 6yr old daughter.

We just found one of these nasties in our house…hope its just one!

  50. By Covonda Chrismer on Jul 19, 2009

Sure hope this stuff works. We recently moved into a home that had been vacant for a couple of months – not quite in the “country”, but with some land. My son’s bedroom is in the basement and we’ve discovered quite a few (LOTS) of spiders – some we know are wolf spiders. I for one can’t stand spiders. To me, they’re the worst. I really need to rid my house of them – forever! Gonna go look for this stuff today.

  51. By Porshia Willis on Jul 20, 2009

I would be VERY appreciative if I could get my hands on EcoSMART. I can’t stand spiders! Just the name alone makes my skin crawl. I have a 14 month old daughter and my husband keeps saying I am arachnophobic. But I do not know if it’s that bad. I see them, I kill them with whatever I can get my hands on. But the bigger they are the more afraid I am to kill them because I’m unsure if they will get away before I can kill it. We live in a tiny apartment and I fear my daughters safety more than my own. I’m also afraid of them because I do not know which spiders are which. Except for a tarantula. So PLEASE allow me to be a tester for EcoSMART.

  52. By Regina on Jul 23, 2009

I live in a wooded area and we have pest control come and spray but, we still have wolf spiders along with cock roaches. I’m not that afraid of a spider except when I pick up something in my house and their is a Wolf spider scrambling away. It frightens me. I have small kids and it scares them. I need help in trying to eliminate my spider problem. Please consider me for an EcoSMART product tester! I will give my honest opinion of your product. I’m thankful that I have found your website. Keep up the good work!!

  54. By Cassie on Jul 24, 2009

I live way out in the country so bugs and spiders are common visitors. I don’t really appreciate their visits, they catch me off gaurd and freak me out. I don’t want to spray harsh chemicals in my house though seeing as I have two cats. If this works then it is definitely what I am looking for.

  55. By jon luedtke on Jul 25, 2009

we have had a few wolf spiders sneak into the pool area and apparently took a bad step into the water and died. we haven’t had any; now we have found 4 in the past week. we gotta seal off the bottom of the screen door for sure. thanks for the info!

  56. By Kathy on Jul 26, 2009

Just wondering if these sprays are going to kill them? Even though people are afraid of them they are useful in keeping down the bug populations. I don’t want to kill them just keep them out of the way.

  57. By Kathy on Jul 26, 2009

I need a potent spray for roaches. I am losing the battle and do not want to have to hire an expensive exterminator. I have tried many products and nothing is working anymore. What do you recommend for this?

  58. By Colleen on Jul 27, 2009

We have the outside of our home sprayed but they’re still finding their way in. I thought they were grass spiders but oh no, they’re definitely wolf spiders. Hobos too – not good. I have sticky traps and catch about 2-3 per week. I just want them to not be in my house. I would love a safer alternative to the commercial spraying!

  59. By Steve on Jul 28, 2009

Two months ago, a strange looking bite showed up on my leg , thru the nite. It awoke me by the itching. By morning I had a spot about the size of a nickel, just above my ankle, it showed up as a circle with a dark red outer cirle, with a penetration of a bite , darkred of to one side . I started treating it with all antibiotic salves, washes etc. then went to doctor, All I got was looks like a bug bite . Being a professional opinion, I took the high powered antibiotic,(which I like to avoid) and it continued to take on many different forms, it got better when I soaked it in epson salts, then over nite it itched so bad I woke to find it looked worse than ever. I was advised to try tea tree oil, and it is much better now but don’t know if it is going to go away. My Grandson , which is into bugs, suggested it may be a Wolf Spider bite, and found this web site. I am an 80 year old senoir, practice natural remedies and supplements, in good health but have always seeem to have an immune defishency. Can u help me. Maxine in Florida

I have 3 other window wells and have not counted the number in them yet but all of them have many spiders in them. The last couple of years I have used the Hot Shots brand spray to take care of them but, they seem to be back in increasing numbers each year. We have 4 children one is an infant and my wife can’t even stand to look out the window. I am excited to try your product to see how effective it will be with this problem.

I have noticed these huge spiders in the garage about 3 or 4 years ago. There haven’t been a ton, but I hate spiders! I have used stuff to spray, but now I have seen a couple in the basement. Today the gas and electric guy came to read the meter and when he went downstairs said that there was a wolf spider. That is what has been in the garage! I didn’t know what it was I just knew it was big and fast and jumps. I have 3 kids 5,4, and 9 months and a dog. I would love to try the EcoSmart product to make it more safe for my family.

I’ve been putting off using a bug bomb in our house due to the toxic chemicals. We’re constantly killing spiders and beetles in our home the old-fashioned way, and I’m always worried someone is going to get bitten while they’re sleeping!

  73. By Daniel on Aug 9, 2009

We’ve got some BIG type of spiders around and occasionally in our home… ugh! We have 3 loving dogs and I wouldn’t want to use something that could harm them or us… I need to try something like EcoSmart on these nasty, evil-looking critters… So of course the real Q on everyone’s mind is: Does it truly work, and is it safe?

At any given night I can go down to our finished basement and capture 4-10 wolf spiders (this usually between the hours of 10pm and midnight. Imagine what comes out after midnight! The kids (all young adults) are afraid to go down there and entertain so the rec room is being used primarily by the spiders for their amusement. I have left my trusty vaccum hose down there to suck them up but I fear that they will just come back down the vacuflo system tubing or will multiply in the canister. I want my house back!!

  75. By Sylvie on Aug 12, 2009

I can go down to my developed basement every night and discover between 4-10 wolf spiders wondering the walls and floors. I have want these creatures irradicated from my premises. I have tried using chestnuts in all corners of the rooms as well as lemon pledge on baseboards and windowsils but to no avail. My adult children will not entertain downstairs anymore due to fear. I keep my trusty vaccum hose down there and suck them up whenever I see one. I wonder if they are now multiplying in the cannister? I want my home back free of spiders.

Thank You for this article! I was trying to identify what type of spider has been crawling around my daughter’s playset and now I know it is a wolf spider. We have been having problems with various pests lately, particularly these wolf spiders, so I am definitely going to try your products to see if they can help. With 5 cats and 1 toddler, your prodcut seems like the perfect solution.

I have recently moved into a new home with my 2 children. We definately have a wolf spider problem around the outside of our home and in the lawn. I can walk around the house on any given day and count 5-10 wolf spiders. I would like to give this product a try and will definately give you feedback on how it works.

Our basement is now home to a University student, as well as many resident wolf spiders! We hope to receive a test bottle of Ecosmart before the spider babies come. For the time being, I am trapping them one by one and taking them into the ivy outside the house, hopefully far enough away so they do not return. Thanks for the informative website!

We have a million spiders in our new build house! My son gets bitten all the time as his bedroom and bathroom are downstairs and get moist often. We have 3 pets so I am paranoid about using bug sprays in the house…I would love to try your ECOsmart product.

my father in-law has been getting spider bites at night. He wanted us to find something to get rid of the wolf spiders. Would this be the product for him?

My 1-bedroom apartment seems to be full of spiders. They have bitten my wife and I, but they don’t seem to be dangerous. We just had our first child, however, and I would like to have something that I can spray on the carpet and around the crib without having to feel like I’m putting my daughter in danger. I think this fits the bill.

This is the spider house! Lots of little house spiders indoors but we’ll get a big ole wolf spider once in a while as well. Even the dogs look frightful of them. I tell the husband to keep them all out in his garage at least.

I have a problem with these icky creatures. They may be a preditor insect, but, they don’t belong in my home. I am forever cleaning the webs they make. I would like to find a product that will take care of them once and for all. I also have a problem with Daddy Long Legs.

We just recently found wolf spiders in our basement. My son has his bedroom downstairs and has found at least 2 dozen or more this fall. He does not want to keep his room downstairs. I would love to try your product. We have animals and do not like to use harsh chemicals.
