For those home gardeners out there, what do you do to save money in your garden? Besides grow your own food, of course.

One efficient way to save money is by saving water.

Location Location Location

Choose a low-lying area for your garden to prevent runoff and to help collect water.

Make sure there’s good soil in the area as well. Using compost, including homemade, will enrich the soil with nutrients for your plants as well.

The type of soil makes a difference to how much water you need. Sandy soil will need water more often.

Everything in moderation

Check the soil before you water. If there is a lot of moisture in the dirt, you can probably hold off on watering for a while.

The average amount of water recommended (including rain) is about one inch a week. However, if it is very hot in your area, you may need to water more often.

Technique

Using a drip system will conserve water, whereas a sprinkler disperses the water farther and evaporates the water into the air.

Use what is called “grey water,” used water from baths, dishes and laundry. It can be full of nutrients. Check the cleaner’s labels to see what’s in them, though.

Water the garden either early in the morning or late evening– more of your water will evaporate between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

And if bugs eat away your garden, EcoSMART’s Garden Insect Killer will help keep them out. Made with natural oils, it’s an eco-friendly way to protect your plants and to keep your family safe.

I would like to test your products, as I have many allergies, and am having to deal with headaches when we clean our home.
