November 30th, 2009 Posted in Mosquitoes & Repellent

Mosquitoes and other flying insects are a terrible nuisance indoors and outdoors. Your typical fly swatter is fairly effective when dealing with these pests, but your traditional fly swatter is soon to be a thing of the past.

Scientists all over the world are developing new modern techniques to help stop pests like mosquitoes, as well as refining the current methods of mosquito control.

This article will explore:

Diseases Mosquitoes Carry

Mosquitoes are harmful mainly because the diseases they can carry. They often bite people and animals to fulfill their daily need for blood. Biting with their long forward mandibles they can suck you dry without you even noticing, until it’s too late.

A mosquito bite is typically harmless and only really leaves an irritated bump. Yet, if that particular mosquito is carrying a disease you could be in big trouble. There are many types of mosquitoes and diseases, but being aware of the most common diseases is the first step in prevention and safety.

Encephalitis

  • Found most commonly in birds, its spread when a mosquito bites a bird and then afterwards bites a person

  • Its most dangerous symptom is swelling of the brain, alongside high fever, stiff neck, headaches, and fits of confusion
  • With a 30-60% mortality rate, those that do survive have varying degrees of brain damage

West Nile Virus

  • It affects mostly children and elderly because of their weaker immune systems

  • Symptoms begin to occur 3 to 14 days after a mosquito bites into your skin
  • 80% of people with West Nile will show no symptoms, while others will have fevers, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and mild rashes

Dengue Fever

  • This disease is limited to the tropics and can cause a range viral infections to fatal fevers

  • It is passed back and forth between mosquito and human, making it a easily contagious disease in certain regions
  • In 1981, a new strain broke out in Cuba causing 300,000 cases of fevers and over 1000 deaths

Malaria

  • Also transmitted from person to person via the mosquito bite, this disease is most common in developing countries

  • Symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, muscle aches, and extreme headaches
  • There are many antimalarial drugs that can cure or prevent the disease in a person, if discovered soon enough

Yellow Fever

  • It doesn’t occur within the United States, but is most often found in Africa and South America

  • The most common symptoms include fevers, chills, headaches, extreme nausea, and in serious cases problems with blood, liver, and kidneys
  • There is no treatment for this disease, other than trying to relieve the symptoms that arise

Modern Control Methods

The fly swatter has been the household standard for years, but in recent times every aspect of society as seen some form of modernization. Scientists have created a Star Wars like laser system to detect and destroy mosquitoes; much like the Death Star destroys planets. The laser zapper can detect audio frequencies of beating wings, particularly the frequencies of a mosquito’s wings.

Once they are identified, the laser hones in on its target, and ZAP, it’s all over. Since this laser gun zaps mosquitoes very effectively, there soon will be little room left for the typical fly swatter in the modern American home. With this method and modified EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards, mosquitoes have their work cut out for them.

When it comes to mosquito control, the EPA recommends emptying and changing stagnant water sources, keeping swimming pools treated, keeping rain gutters unclogged, and windows and doors properly sealed.

Organic Control Methods

While using the laser zapper and EPA techniques, it is important to also use EcoSMART’s organic insecticides. By using the Flying Insect Killer, you can make your home and property mosquito free. Made with all natural chemicals, organic insecticides are safe for your family and the environment.
