Natural Flea Treatment

December 7th, 2009 Posted in Bed Bugs & Fleas

Fleas are a torment for your family’s pets and sometimes for the whole household. If your dog or cat is covered in fleas, then runs in the house and jumps on the couch, your whole family could be at risk.

When dealing with flea problems it is important to make sure you don’t hurt your pet or the environment in the process. It’s also important to make sure you understand how to properly identify a flea problem because quicker identification is the key to successful flea management.

This article will explore:

Flea Identification

A key aspect in ending a flea problem is to first identify the infestation. If you notice many red bumps at the root of your pet or child’s hair, then you’ve most likely stumbled upon a flea bite. If you put your finger through your child’s hair or pet’s coat and find very small black and brown little dots attached to their hair, then you’ve discovered fleas clinging to their hair.

It is important to check for fleas regularly to prevent the infestation from continuing and spreading. Also understanding the life cycle of the flea is very crucial in helping end infestations. The flea life cycle lasts anywhere between 4 and 25 days. Before reproducing the male and female flea must feed on blood.

After the flea is full of blood it mates and can produce 30 to 50 eggs per day, while attached to a host. After several larval stages, the baby fleas spins itself a cocoon and then pupates. When the flea hatches it becomes a fully fledged adult flea. After hatching it latches on to its host and immediately begins feeding.

Flea Treatment For Pets & Kids

Pets are more likely to have problems with fleas then your children, but they can unsuspectingly spread them to your family. Thus, many of the prevention and treatments are similar for pets and kids.

The only difference is once there is already a flea infestation, the flea cleansing soaps for pets and people are drastically different. After discovering the infestation you can buy flea cleansing soap to help deal with the issue.

Once lathered across the scalp or coat, it can help to ease the flea bites and remove the living fleas. Some ways to get rid of fleas include reducing time spent outside during humid weather, frequent vacuuming, washing children and pets often, and using a flea comb to help comb your pets coat.

Organic Flea Treatment

A very important aspect of flea treatment is not harming your children or pets your treating. Certain flea pesticides have been known to cause rashes, poisonings, and even death in certain pets, dependent on the strength of the pesticides.

Also, certain flea cleansing soaps are so strong, in an effort to kill the fleas, that they can be really hazardous for the environment. These soaps and pesticides can cause water pollution, as well as soil damage. To stop flea infestations use EcoSMART’s organic pesticides for guaranteed results.

Made with all organic chemicals it only targets receptors found in insects, thus pets, children, and the environment are protected and left unharmed.

I fully agree that fleas are a problem to get rid of. But finding a product that will be completely safe for the whole family and our pets. it is terrible to use pesticides to kill thus you may end up killing or making the pet deathly ill!

I would definitely love to be a product tester. I am so frustrated that no “reputable” source can give me a straight honest answer about how to get rid of these pests. My dog and our many cats are infected, and I’m so worried about my children being next. I have contacted our pet store, our vet, and our apartment maintenance, and everyone gives me different “solutions,” all of which are costly and contradict the prior suggestions. I am worried about so many chemicals around my pets and family and, obviously, I want these fleas gone!

fleas are an ongoing problem here in florida, and one of my cats is very sensitive to most flea products, so she never gets a break. we’ve also become foster parents for a ferret and you cant use any of that stuff on him. so something that is perfectly safe for them and we can use frequently with out making anyoe sick would be great, as long as it really does the job.

We live in South Florida and I am shocked over the flea and tick infestations that happens here. I lived in North Florida with wooded property and never have had the problem we have now living in the city.
We have a neighbor who loves to rescue cats- great thing to do- bad for us- her animals are always in our yard and her yard is nothing but sand. Fleas just love her cats and sand, however our dog does not love what her cats bring to our home. FLEAS! We have to constantly check the dog and now that he is considered elderly it is not a wise choice to use chemicals on him or his yard. Chemicals are something that we have never exposed him too and do not wish to start now. South Florida is under siege and I would like to shown that your company and product will do what it says it can do. Will you accept my challenge?

I don’t own pets, but there are several stray cats in my neighborhood who are more than willing to share a few fleas here and there. I have a one and a half year old daughter who is ALLERGIC to the bites! I mean, they are attacking us with full force! Any natural safe help that will ensure my daughter’s safety would be a blessing!

In Northwest TN: My house is over-inhabited…by bloodsuckers! This year I have tried every other remedy I could find to try to keep the fleas and ticks off my two dogs and seven cats. We use a quarterly service with Servall that treats the house and perimeter and front yard, I’ve given the dogs CapStar internal medicine to kill pests, all pets had flea and tick collars, I’ve tried washing them, I’ve used sprays and over-the-counter and prescription 30-day dosings on their backs, and powders in the carpet and furniture; I even keep chickens and guinea fowl which are supposed to eat ticks and fleas! One dog is allergic to the bites, and I’m getting eaten alive in my sleep. I need help. I’d love to test your products and pray that they are part of the answer to our infestation problem. Thank you!

I have an annual war with fleas, torturing me, my 2 dogs and my 11 cats, both inside and outside my house. I’m now allergic to the bites and have to take an allergy pill daily to avoid scratching myself to bleeding; I have scars on my legs from the bites over the years. Needless to say, during the Summer I can’t have company. Being a Hippy, toxic stuff is to be avoided at all costs. I’ve been adding brewer’s yeast with garlic to the animal’s food; been using diatomaceous earth on the inside floors and outside; electric traps with nightlights and sticky paper; pans of soapy water throughout in which to deposit the caught ones (and watch them drown); adding Avon Skin-So-Soft to the conditioner step in the dog’s baths, and a mixture of A.S.S.S. & water, shaken, and applied to ME. AND – I finally broke down & bought Advantix for the dogs; the older one was positively suffering this summer. Still, the war wages on, neck-and-neck, with the little blood suckers from Satan. ANYTHING that is not toxic – which your products sound like – that actually WORKS – and that I could even apply directly on the animals or me if necessary – would be a Godsend.
    Thank you -

I share a house with my sister; between the two of us we have 4 dogs, 6 cats, and a bunny. We have used Orkin service for several years, but I am increasingly dissatified with their cost increases and poor customer service. Searching for alternatives, I’ve come upon your site here and am interested in testing EcoSMART products. I am not happy about having pesticides applied in my house, but I have suffered through flea infestations before and am absolutely positively not willing to do it again! I wonder where are the testimonials from people who have tested EcoSMART?
