Natural Pesticides: The Only Way To Eliminate The Housefly

January 21st, 2010 Posted in Organic & Chemical Pesticides

Flies can be found everywhere, sometimes even in your house. They are one of the more annoying pests because they come in large numbers and are hard to catch.

Whether flying around your living room or picnic table the housefly is a nuisance. The life cycle, habitat, food sources, and control methods are all important aspects to learn because they help teach you how to prevent and get rid of the housefly.

The Housefly’s Life Cycle
The housefly favors garbage, manure, and other contaminated items to reproduce and continue their life cycle. This is the first step in preventing the housefly from becoming a problem in your home or property. Make sure to properly dispose of contaminated items and trash to prevent the housefly from getting to it.

This will directly cut off their life cycle. The adult housefly feeds on this contaminated material and then lays its eggs on this trash. They do so because once the larvae hatch from their eggs they can immediately feast on the trash or animal feces surrounding them.

The larvae or maggots hatch within a day and begin to move around the area in which they were born and feed. Within the next week these baby filth flies begin to grow through 3 different stages, last of which is the pupa stage. After a couple days the adult fly emerges and lives for about 25 days. The whole life cycle takes about 8 days to complete.

The Housefly’s Habitat & Food Sources
As previously discussed the housefly feeds on waste material like feces, trash, old food, and anything else that is lying on the ground or trash. The housefly has spongy mouth parts that help to sponge up the food and dissolve it with their saliva. The fly larvae feed with the pores on the surface of the end of their small bodies.

They submerged themselves within their food to eat as much as they possibly can. Before they transform from larvae to pupa they seek out a drier environment away from their initial food source, like in the dirt or on a plant. They even finish their growth in dried animal feces, which is why so many flies accumulate around farms.

Prevention Methods
Prevention is one of the most important aspects of housefly control. Trying to control the habitat and food sources of the fly will prevent them from spreading within your home or property. Make sure to constantly clean your outside trashcan. Clear any stray trash or feces from your property quickly to prevent eggs from being laid on it.

Secure the trash you dispose of so the flies can’t get to it and reproduce on or around it. Cleaning your kitchen and bathrooms often will also help to reduce the presence of the housefly. However, if you already have a fly problem these prevention methods can only work on preventing more flies from being born, not stop the flies already in your home or on your property.

Important Control Methods
To help solve the problem try to make a fly trap out of things already lying around your home. For instance, using 2 soda bottles filled with raw meat can help you trap a decent amount of flies. If you invert the one soda bottle into the other you can make a small corridor for the flies to enter, but small enough for them to get stuck within the soda bottles. Once you catch a decent amount of flies within the trap make sure to place the trap in your refrigerator or freezer to kill the captured flies.
