How Do Ants Find Their Way?

Ants have a wonderful sense of direction because they can literally venture out great distances from their colony and return without a problem. This is why it is so easy for them to find food in your home and then return to their colony. The problem is when they return, they won’t be alone.

It has been established that they use pheromone trails to remember how to return to certain places, as well as help other ants know where food has been found. However, scientists have recently discovered ants that count to find their way home. Scientists began to question how ants in the desert could remember where their colony and food sources were without the use of pheromone trails.

Since the desert has relatively high winds and sand storms the pheromone trails get quickly washed away. After conducting a few experiments, scientists discovered that ants could be biologically counting how many steps they took from point A to point B. This helps to explain why ants are so persistent when they identify your home as a source of food and are able to recall their steps, so that the rest of their colony can join in on the feast.

What Do Ants Eat?

So, ants are easily able to find and remember to your home, but what is it that initially attracts them to your home? Well, they are looking for food and they have set their site on your house. In most cases the food that attracts the ants is the smellier foods that are most likely waste or the remains of food.

A fact about ants is that the smell of lingering trash will be enough to bring them inside or on your property. It takes something as little as crumbs on the floor for the ant to be drawn to your home. If your trash is not properly stored on your property the ants will seek it out and take over your driveway or garage.

Therefore, to prevent your home from becoming a major food source make sure to keep your home extremely clean. Focus your attention on keeping your kitchen and dining area extra clean by washing floors, vacuuming, or anything else you can do to help remove excess food residue. Also make sure trash gets properly disposed of, as well as stored in properly sealed containers.

This looks great! We have two HUGE poplar trees in our yard. Every Spring they drop sap right onto our deck. This brings the ants right up and in to our house! Every year you will find me cleaning out my cupboard!

I have just moved in to this apartment. I realized soon after that there are plenty of ants despite my constant cleaning. Cleaning with antiseptic, vinger and bleachning agent. I managed to locate an ant nest and successfully killed it but I believe there are more which I am having problems with. I am being bitten by them constantly and I have scares on my body due to the scatching. I am contemplating of engaging professional pest control help but would like to try your product first.

For a long time I thought I had termites. In a way I am relieved that they are ants. The thing is that I have young children and do not want them to be subject to poisons. This sounds like a great solution.

I would love to test your products and spread the word to all my neighbors. I am in the military so I could probably get a lot of people turned on to your products.

I have been battling with thatching ants for 25years now. But I need to get a handle on them because I now have grandchildren and when they play in my back yard they are getting bitten by these ants. We have made a garden area and they are building nests along the fences. They are forever biting me when I go into the garden to weed or pick. I would love to try your product, I dont want to use poision on them since they are in my garden area and I do have two cats.

This sounds wonderful too! I saw the mosquito repellant and thought that would be great for our children and maybe the yard and garden to keep bugs out without the chemicals! But to know that we can also use organic means to get rid of ants is great too. Living in the country we get lots of these little persistent creatures and with 3 little ones and a dog I am really not inclined to use chemicals and would LOVE an organic solution for ants! :)

We moved to this location just about a year ago and noticed some thatch ant hills on the other side of the street in a woodsy area. Now this spring there is a hill within ten feet of our yard where the kids like to play in the tall grass and a new one starting in our side yard. They are also climbing up our prune tree in teh front yard and another kind of ant is climbing the outside wall of our garage. I want to get rid of them for good so the kids can continue to play without getting bit.
