Protect Your Cornflakes with Organic Bug Killer
February 2nd, 2010 Posted in Organic & Chemical Pesticides, Pantry & Linen Pests
Nothing ruins your morning like opening up your box of cereal and finding it full of bugs. Certain bugs, called pantry pests, can get into your cabinets and your breakfast. There are many different types, and they go after different food items in your pantry.
Luckily, if they ever do become a problem, cleaning the kitchen with an organic bug killer can get rid of them.

Steps to take when pantry pests pester you:
Identify the source
The first time you spot a bug creeping between the condiments, don’t panic and start spraying bug killer all over. It’s important to know where the bugs originally came from and what else they’re after.
Some common pantry foods these bugs feed on are:
- Flour
- Cereals and crackers
- Cracked grains
- Baking mixes
- Macaroni
- Nuts
- Dried fruits
- Popcorn
- Spices

If any of these are kept in the cabinet where you found the bugs, start searching everything.
Don’t forget to check other things in the kitchen. These pantry pests may also feed on pet foods, birdseed, decorative corn and even dried flower arrangements.
Once you have found the source (like that 3 week old, half-used box of pasta) check any other open packages of food and in any cracks or corners of the cabinets.
Unfortunately, even unopened packages are not always safe. Many pantry pests can chew through cardboard and foil.
Moral of the story? Check everywhere! Food and bugs can even accumulate below or behind appliances.
To avoid a problem, you can prevent an infestation with a few simple precautions:
- Store any food that may be a problem in airtight containers (for example, put cereal in Tupperware with a sealed lid)
- Keep any extra or infrequently used food or spices in the freezer (food will stay fresher longer and safe from bugs)
Before you can think about getting rid of them, it’s important to know what they’re after in your cupboards. Then, figure out just what type of bug you’re dealing with so you can stop it with organic bug killer.
Get rid of them with organic bug killer
Once you’ve identified the source, you will want to ensure you’re kitchen is protected.
First throw out all infested food (even inedible items such as prescriptions and cosmetics) and food around it in a tightly sealed garbage bag.

Obviously, you won’t want to spray this area with chemicals. However, by using organic home pest control methods, you can keep you kitchen safe and bug free.
Pantry pests can be…well…pests. But by using an organic bug killer, like any of EcoSMART’s organic pesticides, you can control them.
This way you can wake up the next morning to a healthy, bug-free breakfast.
