Flies are everywhere and can be really hard to catch if they make it into your home. They spread germs from the outside of your home to the inside.

The housefly is relentless at times and sometimes enough is enough. With the rough economic times of 2010 it can be hard to afford traditional control methods. Learning a few home remedies for dealing with the housefly will go along way towards ridding yourself of such a nuisance and save you money for more important things.

Why Is This Housefly In Your Home?

The housefly is mainly drawn to filth. Most of the time this is why they are entering your home. They like trash of all kinds like manure, rotting foods and vegetables, wet garbage and any other kind of decomposing organic materials for breeding and feeding.

I’m sure you don’t have these materials sitting on the ground in the middle of your kitchen, but if you have them anywhere outside your house or in your trashcans this is enough to draw in the fly. There are a few things you can do to prevent your trash and waste materials from bringing the housefly inside your home.

Empty your trash at least once a week and then also wash your outdoor trashcans out once a month with soap and water. This will help diminish the attractiveness and the smell of your trash for the housefly. In general, keeping your kitchen, bathrooms and outdoor areas clean will help to stop the housefly from targeting your home.

Affordable Home Remedies

The most affordable housefly home remedies include:

Growing Basil
By either growing basil in flower pots or vases you can naturally repel any flies that have invaded your home. The smell of basil deters flies from entering your home or garden (depending where you grow the basil). The housefly is completely disgusted by the smell of basil, which helps send them far away from your home and property. Basil can be bought cheaply at almost any grocery store or garden supply center in your area.

Wine Bottle Fly Traps
Flies are extremely attracted to Chardonnay; even an old bottle’s residue will attract the flies. By leaving an old wine bottle out in your house or backyard you can draw them into the wine bottle. Placing mango peels inside your bottle of wine will make the inside of the bottle slippery as well as hard to fly around in. The flies will get trapped inside the wine bottle and they will eventually die.

Wine & Dish Detergent
Grab a saucer (normally used for cooking) and fill it with white wine or dish detergent. Leave the saucer in an area where flies will quickly find it, either indoors or outdoors. The wine will help attract the flies in the vicinity. After drinking the wine, they will die from ingesting the poisonous dish detergent mixed in with the wine.

Brown Paper Bag Trap
This easily made fly trap will both attract and kill flies very quickly. First, boil water and the add a cup of sugar and a cup of corn syrup. After letting this concoction sit and mix together, spread it on a brown paper bag. Then leave the bag where flies will easily find it because the sugar will help entice them and the corn syrup will help trap them on the bag.
