Home Pest Control Products: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
February 14th, 2010 Posted in Organic & Chemical Pesticides
Why can’t you use any pesticide or insecticide to deal with a pest problem? Most common household insecticides and pesticides have negative side effects that can cause serious complications to people, animals and the environment.

Therefore, you need to choose home pest control products that are safe for use around your home.
Chemical pesticides and insecticides are the most common types of home pest control sold in stores today, but this doesn’t mean they are good for you to use. For instance, pesticides are so harmful that even polar bears are at risk from their use. Believe it or not pesticides get transmitted throughout the food chain just from their use in your home.
When chemical pesticides are passed through the food chain they get bio-magnified or more potent as they transfer from organism to organism. Scientists have found traces of chemical pesticides in polar bears that has caused immune function, endocrine disruption, organ shrinkage, hermaphroditism, and increased death of their cubs.

If polar bears are feeling the affects of chemical pesticides all the way in the arctic, how do you think your family is being affected? There are four main types of chemical pesticides that you should be aware of to help protect your family.
The four main types of chemical pesticides/insecticides are:
Carbamate Pesticides
These types of pesticides affect a person’s nervous system by disrupting your acetylcholine enzyme, which is a neurotransmitter. The affects the pesticide have on your nervous system can be reversed, but continue exposure must first stop.
Oorganophosphate Pesticides
Developed during the early 19th century a poisonous nerve agent, this pesticide also affects enzymes in your immune system. However, this pesticide is not easily transmitted throughout the environment.
Organochlorine Insecticides
It used to be the most commonly used pesticide before it was known to be extremely harmful to your health and the environment. The pesticide DDT, that almost made the bald eagle go extinct, was a type of organochlorine.
Pyrethroid Pesticides
This pesticide is a version of the naturally occurring pesticide pyrethrin. It is also toxic to the nervous system, but does not have harmful consequences to the environment.
As you can see it is very important to choose the right pesticides and insecticides that won’t have negative effects.
