Organic Bug Killers: Beware Of The Yellow Crazy Ant
March 11th, 2010 Posted in Ants & Roaches
Have you ever heard of the yellow crazy ant? Most people haven’t heard of this elusive species of ant because they mostly inhabit Christmas Island, an island off the coast of Australia.

These ants feast on local crabs, which is one of the main reason why they are such a pest for local residents. By feasting on the local crabs, the yellow crazy ants throw off the entire food chain.

Yellow Crazy Ants
These ants are characterized by their pale, yellow body color and unusually long antennae and legs. Yellow crazy ants are referred to as “crazy” because of their frantic movements and frequent changes in directions. This species of ants often lives in mega colonies consisting of multiple queen and colonies acting as one.
25% of the forest covered areas of Christmas island are under the control of the yellow crazy ant because their colonies often stretch for miles. They dig burrows into the soil and then fertilize the area with their droppings. This makes the area in and around their colonies nutrient rich.
The Christmas Island Catastrophe
Christmas Island is located off the coast of Australia and is known as an island paradise. The yellow crazy ant are from India and were accidentally introduced to Christmas Island in the early 1900’s. The ants slowly spread throughout the island and began to disrupt the natural balance of the ecosystem.
The main issue of the yellow crazy ants being on the island is their affect on the native red crab population. The ants kill the crabs with formic acid and eat them. This upsets the natural ecological balance because the crabs feast upon algae and plant matter on the rain forest floor, which is disturbed due to the crazy yellow ants presence. Authorities have spent $1.5 million towards solving the yellow crazy ant problem, but time will tell whether their efforts were successful.

Officials on Christmas Island have baited the ants with poison, but with limited success.
