You’re laying in bed and you look up at your ceiling to see a silverfish crawling slowly above you. This isn’t the best feeling in the world because the silverfish is one the more annoying pests found in your home.

silverfish

Silverfish eat paper and the glue from the dry wall within the walls of your home, making them a huge pest. Learning the proper silverfish control methods will help you successfully control their presence in your home.

This article will discuss:

Silverfish Appearance

The silverfish and firebrats have a similar appearance to one another. The silverfish is wingless, flat, and grey with slender antennae on the front of their bodies. Silverfish grow to about 1/2 an inch.

They are often found anywhere in the house, but mostly in moist or warm locations. They like sinks, bathtubs, and other areas where moisture is readily available. The silverfish also feeds on wall paper and the dry wall throughout the structure of your home.

Silverfish Habits

  • Silverfish prefer dark and moist areas throughout your home
  • They not only feed on wallpaper and dry wall, but on textiles, books, and paper as well
  • Sometimes they feed upon mold or fungi that grow on various surfaces throughout your home
  • They are fast and can travel throughout a building quickly in search of food or shelter
  • Silverfish go through a three stage life cycle called gradual metamorphosis, which takes about 3 to 4 months to complete
  • Another reason why the silverfish prefers dark environments is because they’re a nocturnal insect
  • Silverfish can be found throughout your home at all times of the year

Silverfish Prevention & Control

Even thought their are many successful control methods of the silverfish, prevention is the most successful method of control. You can prevent the silverfish from entering your home by following proper sanitation habits.

cleaning

Since silverfish live in wall partitions, insulation materials, books, papers, and book shelves keeping these areas very clean will help deter silverfish from bothering you or your family. Cleaning your kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms will also go a long way towards silverfish prevention.

Some time ago, a pest control business approached my home and asked if I would like to try their service. I said “No thanks” because we really did not have a problem with pests. Not long after that visit, we started having a strong showing of silverfish. My evil twin suggested that the guy threw some silverfish at the house so I would need their service after all! I hope that is not true! Anyway, silverfish aren’t nasty but it is gross thinking there are bugs invading my space. I don’t even like to go in my closet. Recently, I found one in a coffee cup in my kitchen cabinet and a clean food storage container in another cabinet. May I try out your product? I just purchased some granules for ticks in the backyard. Help!

I just moved into a house and About a month after that; one fell on me. I thought it was no problem but it creeped me out. I never saw one again until (9month after the incident) this past month I have encountered alot in my garage and on the ceilings of my rooms. I saw one in my closet now I can’t even enter a room without having to inspect where I’m sitting every five minutes. I have a terrible phobia of bugs. If I see one I start to cry because I’m so terrified. I moved out out of my previous house be aide of roaches. I thought pests were a thing of the past until I came across these nasty creatures. Everytime I see one I go nuts and ecxsessivley clean until I feel my room is sterilized. Ive sprayed other chemicals but it seems not to work. I have this extremely toxic spray that instantly kills them but I now ha e pets and I don’t want to poison them. Hopefully this works :’(
