  1. Use Vinegar to Erase Scent

When ants find an open container or crumbs, they follow a scent trail to the source of food. If you see a tell tale line of ants, mix vinegar with water and wash the kitchen counters and floor with the mixture. This home made pest control method should erase that scent trail to disrupt the line of ants threatening to take over your kitchen.

  3. Sprinkle Powdered Charcoal Outside
  4. Obviously, we don’t recommend spreading charcoal around your home. But to deter ants, sprinkle some outside your house, especially near entryways. Some claim ants will not cross over the line to make their way inside.

  5. Scatter Bay Leaves in Your Pantry
  6. If you have bay leaves on your spice rack, scatter some on your pantry shelves to deter roaches from finding their way into your food.

  7. Mix Canola Oil and Soap to Kill Soft-Bodied Insects
  8. This home made pest control method targets pests like mites, aphids and mealybugs. Mix one tablespoon of canola oil with a few drops of Ivory soap into a quart of water. Shake the mixture well and put it into a spray bottle. You can then spray any plants with pests on them, the oil will smother the insects.

  9. Mix Hot Pepper Sauce and Soap

  10. hot pepper

Certain pests, like mites, are turned off by hot pepper. Mix 2 tablespoons of hot pepper sauce or cayenne pepper with a few drops of Ivory soap. Then add the mixture into a quart of water. Let the liquid sit overnight then stir and pour this into a spray bottle and shake the bottle frequently while using.

  11. Combine Cooking Oil, Baking Soda and Soap to Target Insects and Fungal Diseases
  12. Mix 1 tablespoon of cooking oil with 2 tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of Ivory soap into a quart of water. Again, put this into a spray bottle and apply to infected plants.

  13. Combine Garlic and Mineral Oil Against Pests
  14. Insects are either just irritated or even poisoned by the compounds found in garlic. Mix 3 or 4 cloves of minced garlic with 2 teaspoons of mineral oil and let it sit overnight. In the morning, strain the garlic out of the mixture.

Then add the oil to 1 pint of water while adding 1 teaspoon of biodegradable dish soap. Store the mixture in a container and dilute when you use it by adding 2 tablespoons of the garlic/oil concoction to a pint of water whenever you use it.

Caution: do not spray this on plants on a sunny day, the oil may burn the leaves.

  15. Spray Soap and Water on Leaves
  16. A wide variety of pests (including aphids, scale, mites and thrips) are killed by 1 tablespoon of dish washing soap and a gallon of water. Just mix the two and spray directly on the pests to test if this home made pest control tip works for you.

  17. Drown Slugs in Beer

  18. slugs

This may sound crazy, but beer can actually become a deadly dunk tank for slugs. Put a tuna can or pie plate in the ground and add beer up to an inch below the rim. The yeast will attract slugs for a drink, but since they have to lean into the tin, they will fall in and eventually drown.

My cat is notorious for leaving food crumbs on the floor by his bowl, and every spring and summer I can count on the ants to show up to gather them.

I usually resort to buying ant traps, since I hate to spray the little guys and have to wipe up their tiny bodies (also not great around kitty’s food). But often they ignore the traps, and I end up having to kill them by hand anyways.

It would be wonderful to have a repellent or trap that doesn’t require the disposal of dead ants and is also safe around my pet’s bowl.
