Just like any other type of organism, they thrive in specific environments with particular conditions. These particular conditions consist of weather, time of year, temperature, and more. It’s essential to know how various temperatures affect the mosquito and its livelihood.

Why Are Mosquitoes A Danger?
Mosquitoes cause over one million deaths every year due to the various diseases they tend to carry. Mosquito-borne diseases are any disease the mosquito carries and are then able to transmit to humans and animals. These diseases include, but are not limited to dog heartworm, yellow fever, West Nile virus, malaria, dengue, and Eastern equine encephalitis.

Besides the diseases the mosquito transmits, their bites can leave your skin extremely irritated depending on your skin’s reaction. Everyone’s skin is sensitive to a mosquito’s bite, but to different degrees. The reactions can range from simply leaving an irritated red bump to causing itchy infection ridden skin.

A Mosquito’s Reaction To Different Temperatures
Mosquitoes are cold blooded insects, thus they cannot regulate their own body heat. Since this happens, a mosquito’s body temperature often mirrors the surrounding environments temperature. Mosquitoes don’t typically thrive in the winter because they cannot withstand the typical freezing temperatures associated with the winter season.

Mosquitoes function at their best in temperatures close to 80°. This is why the mosquito is the biggest nuisance during the summer months. The mosquito still thrives during the winter months, but once the temperature falls below 60°, the mosquito becomes lethargic.

At 50° the mosquito can not function and becomes completely immobile. To avoid these temperatures and winter months, mosquitoes hibernate to preserve their species and kin. Mosquitoes often thrive in the mass numbers in tropical climates, so they can stand pretty humid and intense temperatures. Therefore, it would take extremely high temperatures like 100° and above to stop the mosquito.
