Can You Name Some Natural Mosquito Killers?

April 7th, 2010 Posted in Mosquitoes & Repellent

Mosquitoes are annoying pests, which makes removing them from your life a pleasure. There are many control methods available to help deal with the wrath of the mosquito, but no control method is successful as Mother Nature.

mosquito

Almost every organism has a predator and the mosquito is no exception. The mosquito’s main predators are guppies, birds, bats, and dragonflies.

The Guppy
As one of the most common natural mosquito killers, guppies thrive in all water sources. Since water is necessary for the growth of a mosquito; they will eventually be in a body of water when producing or growing through to their next stage in life. This makes the mosquito readily available for guppies to come up to the surface and scoop up mosquito eggs, mosquito larvae, or adult mosquitoes floating on the surface.

Birds
Birds, like the purple martin, feed on swarms of mosquitoes whenever they come in contact. However, they do not contribute greatly to mosquito control.

bird

Most species of birds eat any flying insects they come in contact with, which given the amount of insects there are in the world, limits the amount of mosquitoes they consume. The mosquitoes a bird consumes only makes up 0-3% of their overall diet.

Bats
The bat also thrives in the evening hours, when mosquito activity is at its height. They do not go out and specifically hunt for mosquitoes, but if they stumble upon them in the sky, it’s all over. Again, mosquitoes can be consumed by bats in mass amounts, but mosquitoes only make up about 1% of a bat’s diet overall. Bats do serve as wonderful insect control, no matter what habitat they are in.

The Dragonfly
The dragonfly hunts mosquitoes in mid-air. They often consume large amounts of mosquitoes at one time, attacking a swarm, eating one mosquito after another. Dragonflies are often known as “mosquito hawks” because they can kill thousands of mosquitoes at a time.

dragonfly

Like the other natural predators, they don’t consume enough mosquitoes to make an impact on their population. The dragonfly not only feeds upon the mosquito when it is a full grown adult, but also when it’s in its larval stage. A dragonfly larva develops in water, making mosquito larva an easy nearby target.

Not Mother Nature, But Still Natural Control
Since most of these natural predators do not put a huge dent in the mosquito population; it leaves many mosquitoes to bite and bother you. By using EcoSMART’s organic insect killer, you can safely and effectively stop the mosquito in its tracks.

Developed to only target receptors in insects like the mosquito, EcoSMART’s all natural pesticides are harmless to the environment, pets, and most importantly, people. These organic pesticides are harmless because we don’t have the same receptors that bugs have throughout their bodies. Don’t leave it to Mother Nature to stop mosquitoes and use organic pesticides for all your pest control needs today.

We need to send our thanks to these natural mosquito killers. Think how much more we would be scratching mosquito bites without them!

Thanks for the tips on controlling mosquitos, but how about spiders. I live on a lake in SC and I am bombarded with spiders. Looking for a safe product to use to control spiders which would be safe around my family.

Hi, We live in a heavily wooded area of Massachusetts with 12 Siberian huskies. We won’t spray with chemicals because of our animals and the animals who live in the woods, but in spite of having a mosquito magnet, the mosquitoes here are awful as are the ticks. We tried your Insect Killer for Lawns and Landscapes on a portion of the area outside the dogs’ kennel fencing tonight and are going to try the Mosquito and Tick formula on the remaining portions of the yards perimeters tomorrow. (My husband got the Insect Killer instead of the Mosquito and Tick forumula by accident.) We are hoping your products work!

We bought the 32 OZ house end sprayer of Mosquito and Tick control. We want to use it in a pump up sprayer instead of using a hose end sprayer. How much water do we add for 32 OZ of concentrate to get the right dilution to cover 5000 sf?

    Thnaks for yor great product.

Hi – I was wondering if it was safe to use your products on grass I feed to my guinea pigs? The mosquitoes are crazy here right now, but I don’t want to take any chances with my pets’ health. Thanks very much!

  12. By EcoSMART Zach on Jun 1, 2010

    Hilary,

The product is safe, but should not be ingested by humans or animals.

I would recommend rinsing the grass before feeding it to the guinea pigs if possible, just to avoid a possible negative effect (it causes nausea in humans if ingested).

Good luck – and thanks for commenting!

I’m excited to use your products. I have a variety of insects I’ve been dealing with and both the insect killer and the garden fungicide is going to make a drastic difference.

I just applied the garden insect killer on my mosquito infested Washington DC backyard. Kill!

Catnip is the best mosquito repellant / better than DEET and you can’t get more natural nor eco friendly. Word of caution – the flowers attract bees, so I just pinch them off at first sign. Can someone Please tell me what kind of mite is in some commercial orchid medium and shows on lower leaves and in the medium. Tiny, tiny, almost clear to white, looks like salt and can hop. And what will kill them safely. I’ve read books and web sites until I’m crosseyed and find no mention of these. Please help! Thanks

I am wondering if you ever work with larger organizations, or city governments to use your organic product to treat problem areas? I leave near a city park, that also has an emergency water retention pond. So we have a million mosquitoes. The park is on a 2 week spray rotation for it, but it doesn’t seem to work. Do you have any suggestions on how I could initiate a city wide test of your product?

I’ve heard garlic oil works too. I haven’t tried it myself though . . .
Can’t wait to try your bug spray! Effective and safe for my babies! Sounds good to me!

I have a huge mosquito problem in my vegetable garden. Can ecosmart organics concentrate be used in a cold fogging machine directly on vegetables? And, if so, how long a wait to harvest/consumption? Thank you.

BTW, I just came across an article concerning killing of fire ants, wonderful creatures here in the sunny south, NOT! Anyways, supposedly from the Univ. of Georgia, it says to use approximately 1/3 to 1/2 liter of ‘club soda’ per mound. The CO2 suffocates the mound, and since there is no sugar, doesn’t attract new tenants.

    It’s worth a try for under $2.00.

I LOVE the way the Garden Insect Killer smells, and the way all the bugs flew off of my veggies. I also LOVE the fact that my 6 and 4 year old is safe around this product. I am going to buy another bottle immediately!!

I’m SO happy to have found a safe and effective alternative to all those nasty chemicals we’ve been using! I’m sending my husband out to get some of this asap!

  23. By Lesley on Jun 28, 2010

I am so glad I found this site!! The mosquitoes are horrible and our middle son seems to be allergic to them. Every time he gets bitten it swells up like a golf ball. My husband hardly ever gets bitten and this year he has been getting bitten alot…and he eats garlic in everything!! I am going to go to the store and buy some bug spray for our boys 6, 4 and 2. And my husband can try it too. If it works maybe we will try the spray for the garden. He hasn’t put anything on it yet and that is where he is getting his bites from. So, if the bug spray works we will try the garden and lawn sprays. Here’s to country living! :)

Mosquito and Tick control says it kills flying insects. How does it affect butterflies? Both as direct contact and if they come into contact with a sprayed flower or bush?

  25. By Larry on Jul 2, 2010

Tried your mosquito fogger today, worked well keep up the good work.

Wonderful product. I used the Mosquito product for the first time last week and it works. I have tried the Garlic products and have used the toxic insecticides and neither worked that well. I feel much more comfortable using a non-toxic product that is safe for my grandkids, my pets, and myself. Thank You!!!

Just tried Ant and roach killer , makes my house smell like cinnamon and it also killed those horrible bugs that get in flour. Did a better job than any pesticide I’ve ever used I am sold and want to try the mosquito killer next so I can enjoy outdoors again

Last month, I noticed a large number of ants around the foundation of our house and in our kitchen after rainstorms. This month, while weeding my yard by hand, I also noticed a large number of grubs and small hopping bugs. As a result, I decided to buy something to address these problems. With two dogs that are active outdoors, I needed a product that was safe for pets and decorative plants.

I purchased the Organic Insect Killer Granules and applied them to the lawn this morning. The scent from the natural oils assured me that it was applied in sufficient quantities, and I look forward to monitoring the results.

I recently moved to Chicago area from southern California, I can’t believe how bad the mosquitos are!!! I have been covered in bites and refused to use DEET. I came across your product and decided to give it a try. I am amazed that an all natural non-toxic product could work so well. And it smells so good. I have used the Mosquito Fogger, Flying Insect Killer and Mosquito & Tick Control; they have all surpassed my high expectations. The best part is that my dogs, even the one with sensitivities, are safe when I use these products. THANK YOU!

We are always having outdoor BBQs during the summer and mosquitoes can really put a damper on things. I also have a cat so I have to be careful about what products I use. If I can use a product that does the trick while not harming my cat, I’m all for it!!
