Organic Bug Repellents: Useful For All Campers
April 19th, 2010 Posted in Mosquitoes & Repellent, Organic & Chemical Pesticides
Camping is guaranteed family fun, no matter where your family likes to camp. One not so fun thing about camping is bug bites.

Preventing and eliminating bug bites is an important way to ensure your family camping trip remains fun. Choosing organic bug repellents is also a way to make sure your family remains safe and free of bug bites.
This article will discuss:
Preventing Bites at Your Campsite
Prevention is by far one of the most successful approaches to insect control because it does not harm any insects, but repels them much like a processed repellent would. When camping, prevention techniques are important to ensure the experience isn’t ruined by a bunch of bug bites.
Choosing surroundings that are completely bug free is impossible, but you can choose environments that are less apt to have tons of bugs. Choose areas with short grasses and short weeds because they are less likely to have high numbers of insects. Avoiding insects can be as simple as setting up camp away from puddles, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water.
Mosquitoes and other biting insects spawn in water, so sleeping away from these areas will help prevent you from getting bitten. Buying conventional insect control tools can be effective towards protecting your family, but not helpful to your wallet. Therefore, keeping your campsite clean is a free alternative to eliminating pests from your camping experience.
Clean food scraps and crumbs, which will stop the allure of your site to animals and insects alike. Also keeping a campfire lit (until you go to sleep) will help repel insects because they too are irritated by excessive smoke. Using organic insect repellent is also very helpful towards riding yourselves of pesky mosquitoes and other biting pests.
Organic Vs. Conventional Repellents
Learning the scoop on insect repellents is important because there are positives and negatives to organic and chemical insect control. Both forms of bug repellents are effective at stopping bugs with their various ingredients. EcoSMART’s organic insect repellent is made from natural ingredients (like cinnamon and rosemary oils) that block an insect’s adrenaline receptors that plants, animals, and people don’t have.

This leaves plants, animals, and people unaffected by the power of this organic repellent, leaving insects running scared. Chemical or conventional repellents use chemicals like DEET, which similarly affects an insects receptors, but in their antennas. These chemicals kill or repel insects, but can also have harmful consequences if absorbed into a plant, animal, or person.
When using conventional repellents rich in DEET, it is important to make sure to only use recommended levels (especially with children). However, chemical repellents and insecticides are often easier to find in stores, while organic repellents and insecticides are harder to find and require a little extra effort to locate.

From the first time I found eco-friendly/organic mosquito repellent/killer I was hooked. The one I found in my local supermarket worked so well that I went back to buy more and discovered it was going to be discontinued. At that point I bought all the rest of the remaining cans.
I have not yet found any other stores that sell it in my area.
That is how I found this site. I hope i’m one of the first 1,000 to comment, I’d love to be a product tester.

Hello there. I was like searching for the best mosquito repellent, i googled it, then i randomly click some sites and end up here. i read the whole blog. I’m interested on trying any repellent that could help out in any way it can but not causing any harmful effect on environment. I’m from Philippines, a tropical country, its rainy season here, so a lot of bugs and insects fester every households. Well i don’t hate ‘em, those crawlies and flying one’s, i’m actually an insect lover, but what i hate most are mosquitoes. During these passed 2 years, mosquitoes have been increasingly swarming my neighbors and my village, not just here but as well as on other regions, well of course, the wide spread of diseases have been common like that of Encephalitis, Dengue Fever, Malaria and Yellow Fever. After the wet season here last year, my village suffered some unwanted rate of diseases, about hundreds of ‘em. Dengue fever have been wide spread. But now on a controllable rate. Thanks God. Yet until now, i’m still searching for some products that could aid us a lot repel these harmful viral-disease-carriers and at the same time wouldn’t cause any harm to nature. If by chance im to be selected to be a tester – then it would be a privilege to take part of any of your surveys and if im not, then please send those who needs those testers.
Thanks and may EcoSMART continue making these wonderful products. It doesn’t just save lives but also pay respect to nature.
