Common Pests
Knowing what pests are bothering you and your family is the first step towards successful insect control. Catering the pest control technique to the specific type of insect in your home is vital. Some pests found in and around homes include:
- Ants
- Mosquitoes
- Spiders
- Bees
- Flies
- Centipedes
- Crickets
- Ticks
- Mites
- Pillbugs
Most of these insects are seeking shelter or food inside your foundation, windows, walls, carpeting, and anywhere else they can get their hands on. Insects enter your home in a variety of ways, most of which can be prevented with proper knowledge of these entrances and exits. Some of these insects thrive in your home better-off than they were outside. This makes it imperative that you practice the proper control methods.
Pest Control Techniques
Since there is a multitude of ways to control pests inside your home, narrowing down the best method is key. Prevention is often hailed as the most effective means of pest control to date. By keeping your home clean and sanitary, you will reduce the allure of your home to unwanted visitors dramatically.

If you keep food properly stored and disposed off, insects will not find your home as attractive as they did previously. Not to mention, prevention is an much more affordable means of control than other techniques. Professional exterminators are a very effective means of insect management, but their services are potentially hazardous and expensive.
The pesticides they use are extremely effective, but are rich in chemicals that are potentially dangerous if ingested or if used around children. Other store bought control products are equally as successful in dealing with these issues, but are not often affordable for everyday use and often contain harmful chemicals.
Organic Pesticides & Insecticides
The many types of pesticides and insecticides can be used residentially or commercially, quickly riding any bug problems. However, most pesticides and insecticides are filled with harsh chemicals that make them effective against insects, but also can cause damage to innocent bystanders.

I bought my first house last Fall, and we’re seeing a lot of black ants in our rec room now that it’s Spring. The rec room is in the lower-back level of our back-split house. The floor is hardwood (on top of tile, on top of concrete) – it’s old and has many small cracks between the boards. I killed a bunch of ants with a liquid solution after I found a crack that they were taking a lot of food down through, but now they seem to have spread out! I hate ants.
