Use Organic Pesticide: Ants Can’t Win

Alice would agree that when it comes to queens, some are at the heart of the problem.

Wonderland isn’t much different than the insect world, because when it comes to the queen of an ant colony, you better believe you’ve found the main source of your dilemma.

If you’re uneasy about using synthetic chemically-based pesticides in your home to kill ants and their queen, explore these natural strategies to eliminate your problem once and for all.

Kill The Queen

You’ll be shouting, ‘Off with her head,” because a colony of ants cannot survive without their queen.

There are many natural ways you can experiment with to kill ants and their queen.

Breakfast Killer

I bet you didn’t know grits are a great natural ant killer. This breakfast treat actually expands an ants stomach and eventually destroys them.

However, do you really want to sprinkle uncooked grits everywhere? Talk about a huge mess.

Besides grits, some people have found success in the battle against ants with sugar.

sugar

Try:

1. Mixing Sugar, Boric Acid and Water

This sugary treat will attract ants, slowly poison them and eventually kill the queen after the contaminated retreat back to the nest.

The levels of ingredients in this mixture are important because you want it to be strong enough to kill the ants, but not too strong that it will take them out before they make it back to their queen.

Try mixing:

* 1 cup water
* 2 cups sugar
* 2 tablespoons boric acid

You can sprinkle this mixture on surfaces where you’ve seen ants.

Caution: boric acid could harm your children and pets; make sure only ants are feasting on this concoction.

2. Sprinkling Artificial Sweetener

Aspartame is found in some artificial sweeteners, and some claim that it’s a great ant killer.

Open packets of artificial sweetener and pile it in the corners of your home.

The downside to this is it may not work, and do you really want artificial sweetener lumped in the corner? It could also get messy.

Some people think these natural strategies are a waste of time because they may not work, and if they do it’s only for a short period of time.

Lead The Ants Out

ant line

If the strategies discussed aren’t working to kill ants on the spot, perhaps you could try to lure them out of your house.

Use:

* Lemon juice
* Peppermint oil

Make a line of these products directing the ants outside. After you’ve lured them out, you can caulk the points of entry so they can’t get back in.

Sounds reasonable, but do you really want to use this Hansel and Gretel approach of sending ants on parade?

This method may also be difficult in making sure that you get every last one.

No fear; there is an organic pesticide ants can’t compete with.

    This product is exactly what I need. I have a child, a cat and a dog…with and ant problem. I clean constantly, hence the pets and child :) but the ants hang out in the bathroom and kitchen no matter what. I break down and buy sprays and traps I have to hide from my pets and child, that I know are harmful weather they say “unscented”, the fumes are still in your home. And what are those ingredients? It’s scary and toxic to anyone. I want to get rid of my bugs, not my family to some cancer causing chemicals. Am I wrong? I would love to go all natural but I’ve never been brave enough to try products in stores for higher pricer.
    The Ecosmart Product Tester is a great way to prove to everyone that toxins don’t have to rule your life. Natural is back. I hope I get my chance, Thank you.

    I live in an apartment complex with not only my own children and pet running around but many many others. The ants outside are completely consuming the the grass where all the kids and dogs play. Is this product intended for or safe for spraying a large area where the kids and animals will be? There are prob a couple acres here that I would like to treat without poisons. I just do not know if this product is intended for such a large area. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi Audrey,

    EcoSMART is intended for both indoor and outdoor use. Make sure to read the label on the product you choose, and apply as directed.

    For you ant problem, EcoSMART Ant & Roach Killer is designed to kill fast, but it kills on contact. Because the ingredients are all-natural and leave no toxic residue, they do not persist in the environment long after you’ve sprayed them.

    We just purchased our house about two weeks ago. Just tonight I found an ant at the top of the staircase coming from the basement. There are four of us and a dog, so I typed in natural ant pesticide in Yahoo and found your site. Like to give it a good try now and if successful, I would purchase the product in the future as well.
    Thank you.

    During half term last week we found some ants in the science and domestic science areas of the school. As children have access to all areas I have to be able to use a 100% safe product in order to eradicate any pests. Looking at your products it would appear they would be safe to use, would you confirm please.

    Thanks

    Hi, my Husband and I just moved into an older house that we’re renting. We needed more room because I’m pregnant with our first! Little did we know, we’d have to share our house with hundreds of ants! I am skittish about using all the harsh chemicals because of being pregnant so I typed in Organic Ant Killers and your site popped up. I’d love to try your product! Thank you for making an organic solution!

    Help! My home is being invaded by ants! I have 3 cats, 2 dogs, and my husband & I living in the home, so I refuse to use harmful chemical sprays to take care of the problem. I just recently tried an all natural ant killer from another company that didn’t work worth a darn…the ants would just walk around the stuff, and not through it like they were suppose to. I would really like to try your product, and get rid of these ants. Thank you for protecting humans, the environment, and pets!

    Would the granules product you have also work for ants if spread around the perimeter of the house? I’m renting an older home and I’ve noticed that there are “openings” everywhere and the front door is level with the ground. Ants like to congregate and the front door and near the kitchen window.

    Ants are such a pain! I have caulked everywhere I can think of in my kitchen. They still find other ways to come in.

    I’m glad I heard about your product on the radio. My two big problems are ants in the kitchen and spiders in my garage. My cats sometimes sleep in both areas, so I don’t want them getting sick from anything I spray.

    My house has a raised foundation and the ants are coming in through one of my air conditioning registers in the floor. I tried the boric acid mixture and that only attracted more ants. I followed the directions on the package and poured a few drops of the stuff for the ants for over a week. They kept on coming and it seemed like the whole neighborhood of ants were coming in. I’m hoping to try the EcoSmart Ant spray and become a tester. I have small toddlers and worry that toxic pesticides are dangerous.

    If you have a problem with ants around the kitchen, I have always found a good sprinkle of powdered cinnamon always prevents the little tykes from getting around the kitchen. works especially well around door frames and with wooden floors. Plus the smell is quite nice too…for humans! and also completely safe for toddlers and babies!

    We have Argentine ants by the thousands come into and out of our house to eat whatever they can find and to incubate their eggs by the thousands. We clean, keep the sink empty, turn around and they are there again. Boric acid and sugar slows them down after a week or so, but they never stop. We need a product that effrectively kills the queen and the workers.

  15. By Albee on Jul 29, 2010

    P.S. We use EcoSMART spray which kills the workers, but has no effect on the overall problem.

    I’m desperately searching for a product that is safe around animals and that works. We maintain several community cat colonies and are having such a problem with ants. I’ve tried another eco friendly product and was very disappointed. I am looking forward to trying this product though…maybe the grits too.

    I maintain a clean household, yet every Spring I battle the same problem: ants. I have both dogs and little ones around the house, so don’t want to use harsh chemical pesticides. I’ve used the commercial sugar/boric acid solution, which works to an extent, but not until AFTER the ants have made their way inside. I’d love to find a product I can use pro-actively, and perhaps keep the disgusting little pests outside in the first place.

    So glad I found this. I was searching for an organic way to get rid of the ants in my home once & for all! They don’t seem to be in a concentrated area but just here-and-there. I have two kids, a cat & a dog so I’m always skeptical about the commerical insecticides.

    I would love to try out some of your cleaning supplies and pest control products to review on one of my websites. I am the blogger on http://thefamilysaver.com and http://meijermadness.com!

    Wow, i have to try this. We have just moved into a lovley home with a beautiful back yard. We spent one day out there with our 3 yr old and we all ended up with nasty green ant bites. We are getting a puppy in a few weeks so anything i use to get rid of them must be non toxic to pets and kids alike.

    I really would like to try this. We got black ants everywhere in my house, and they’re coming out from the gaps of my hardwood floor…But I don’t want my 8-month old son to get any harm from chemicals, so organic and natural is absolutely the choice I would like to try.
