Organic Pesticide: Aphids’ Worst Nightmare
May 19th, 2010 Posted in Ornamental & Lawn PestsDoes it seem like the aphids on your plants have been watching a little too much “19 Kids and Counting” on TLC this spring, because their population keeps getting larger and larger?

Female aphids can give live birth and lay eggs, meaning massive colonies can build quickly — massive colonies of creepy plant-craving lice, not a bunch of cute J-named kids.
Because of this, dealing with an aphid infestation can seem never ending, but trying these strategies will help change the channel from TLC to DEAD APHID:
How To Make An Aphid Killer
You can make an organic pesticide aphids will perish from, while preparing your next Italian sauce. These 2 quick mixes are made with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.
1. Tomato Leaf Spray

The aphid toxic compound alkaloid is found in tomato leaves. If you cut the leaves up and dilute them with water, it’s safe to say you’ve found a natural way to get rid of your problem without harming the plant or yourself.
You’ll Need:
* 1-2 cups of tomato leaves
* 2 cups of water
* A strainer or cheesecloth
* Spray bottle
To Make:
* Soak tomato leaves in the water overnight
* Strain the leaves out of the liquid in the morning using cheesecloth or a fine strainer
* Add another 1-2 cups of water to the liquid
* Mix into a spray bottle
How To Use:
* Spray the stems and foliage of the infested plant
* Pay special attention to the underside of leaves where aphids love to hang out
2. Garlic Oil Spray

This homemade pesticide will kill aphids because the sulfur in garlic is toxic to the pest, and the dish soap will break down their soft bodies.
You’ll Need:
* 3-4 cloves of garlic
* Mineral oil
* Strainer or cheesecloth
* Liquid dish soap
* Water
* Spray bottle
To Make:
* Mince or finely chop the cloves of garlic
* Add the garlic to the mineral oil and let it sit for 24 hours
* Strain out the garlic pieces
* Add the remaining liquid to a pint of water
* Stir in the liquid dish soap
* Mix everything into a spray bottle
How To Use:
* Test your spray’s strength by squirting an inconspicuous part of the plant
* Dilute mixture with more water if the plant gets yellow after 2 days
* Spray the entire plant, if there is no plant harm
* Make sure to spray on the underside of leaves
These are only 2 do-it-yourself aphid killers; however, why not leave the concocting to the experts?
EcoSMART offers all natural pest control options that will take care of your aphid problem without you having to mix anything.

Unfortunately we do not have a larger bottle of the outdoor insect killer, but we have some granules available that are used with a rotary spreader.
Hope this helps – thanks for commenting!

i LOVE THIS STUFF. I AM A FIRST TIME USER, I USED THE LAWNSPRAY FOR MY BACKYARD BEFORE WE SET UP OUR POOL. WE HAVE ALL KIND OF BUGS IN OUR MINI FOREST. IT KILLED ON CONTACT, AND IT WAS SAFE AROUND OUR 2 DOGS. I ADMIT I WAS SCARED TO USE IT AROUND THEM AD MY KIDS, AT FIRST! BUT, ALL WAS SAFE!! THIS IS A GREAT PRODUCT!!
