Did you know that a wasp is often able to sting multiple times?

Sounds fun, right? Not so much …

Stings from wasps, hornets and yellow jackets can ruin even the most perfect of summertime moments.

Keep you and your family sting-free this summer with these wasp prevention tips and tricks.

1. Locate Nests

Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets build nests on tree branches, roof overhangs and inside walls and attics.

You should never disturb a nest during the day, because that is when insects are most active. Keep the nest locations in mind, and warn children about the dangers of attacking a nest.

When getting rid of these pests, apply a wasp spray at sunrise or sunset, soaking the nest and contacting as many bugs as possible. Repeat this as many times as necessary, or until all stinging insects are dead.

Keep in mind, however, that wasps are a great insect control tool, so perhaps it is worth your while to leave them be.

2. Don’t be a Wasp Target

Certain things attract wasps. Doing the following will help to deter these pests:

  • Wear shoes while outside.
  • Avoid heavy fragrances and bright clothing.
  • Cover all sugary drinks and foods.
  • Check food for wasps — they often hide inside or underneath meats and sweets.
  • Do not swat at them. Wasps are attracted to moving targets.
  • Do not approach nests.

3. Wasp-Proof Your Home

By caulking up any cracks in your house, putting screens on windows and covering alcoves, you can wasp-proof your home.

The less places wasps have to live, the less likely they are to bother you and your family. Just a few minutes of prevention can make all of the difference.

Some also say rubbing soap onto common nesting locations will make the area too slippery for wasps to build nests. This is also helpful for keeping them out of birdhouses.

Of course, use caution when implementing any of these preventative methods.

4. Be Clean

Wasps are attracted by scents, so be sure to properly dispose of your trash and keep all foods covered.

5. Use an Organic Wasp Spray

Try a natural bug spray to kill wasps. EcoSMART offers a great wasp spray.

I just found a what I think is a paper or poliste wasp, based on internet research this morning, on my deck close to a door. My first reaction is too get rid of it safely; however, above it says that they can be a great insect control tool. What kind of insects do they keep away? Mosquitoes by any chance? I also have a bird’s nest close by, and i want to remove the wasps if it is better for the birds. I do have a baby, so I don’t want wasps if it is going to be dangerous for her.

Is the Wasp spray good for getting rid of other insects? I want the strongest long distance spray that I can get, which will kill the “gypsy moth worms” which are destroying my trees. If they get on my skin I get a horrible rash which takes weeks to get rid of. This Summer I started out with 1 web nest, which I thought was bygone. By now they have taken over 2 more trees. I’d like to spray them when everything is frozen and hopefully they are dormant. Will that work?
