Gnats Infestation Driving You Crazy On The Soccer Field and At Home?

June 25th, 2010 Posted in Flies & Gnats

When it comes to soccer, the only thing worse than some of the referee’s calls during the World Cup (I still love you USA) is being ambushed by annoying gnats while you’re watching your kid’s game.

They hover around your head and face, and sometimes prohibit you from seeing the perfect moment in the match.

If you are not only experiencing gnats infestation on the field, but also at home, check out these prevention tips and traps, before you go crazy.

Gnat Control at the Game and for the Home

Some gnats (black flies) bite, while others cause unwanted irritations and aggravations.

Taking the necessary prevention and control steps is the only way to be gnat-free.

Gnat Control at the Game

Have you ever wondered why gnats come in swarms, and buzz above you when you’re trying to concentrate on the game?

The reason gnats (and other insects) hover around your head is because they are attracted to the CO2 emissions that are heavily released from your noggin.

If you are standing at a soccer game, try to stand near someone who is taller.

Hopefully the pesky gnats will use their head as a landmark, while they leave yours alone.

…But don’t worry if you’re the tallest fan, because you can always choose a low seat.

Take Care of Gnats Infestation in Your Home

Don’t let gnats bother you while you watch the game from your home television.

If your home is undergoing a gnats infestation, you must first get rid of fungus hot spots including:

  • Over-ripened peaches, bananas or tomatoes
  • That sack of potatoes you forgot your stored in your cabinet
  • Over-watered indoor potted plants
  • Indoor compost buckets

After you’ve eliminated these spots that gnats crave, move your fruits and veggies into the fridge, take the compost pile outside and build your own gnat trap.

This easy-to-do trap, will surely take care of your pesky problem.

How To Build Your Own Gnat Trap

1. Get a Jar
Take the lid off a glass jar, and thoroughly rinse the jar with soap and water.

jar

Pick a jar that has a wide mouth.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Pour 5 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar into the jar.

Some people claim red wine also works.

3. Plastic Wrap
Cut a sheet of plastic wrap into two pieces of equal size.

The plastic wrap should be large enough to cover the mouth of the jar, with about one inch to spare.

4. Rubber band
Place both sheets of plastic wrap over the lid of the jar and secure with a rubber band.

Because gnats are small, and can escape easily, it’s important to secure the plastic wrap tightly.

5. Fork
Use a fork to poke a few holes in the plastic wrap.

Keep your hole spread apart, and not to close to the edge of the lid.

6. Set Your Trap
Place your homemade gnat trap next to the source of the infestation.

If you have noticed the insects in more than one location, make several traps and place them around the house.
