Are Centipedes and Millipedes Harmful?
Unlike many other household pests, people know little about centipedes and millipedes.
So what’s their story?
They are distant relatives of lobsters, crayfish and shrimp, which shows why, although land-dwellers, they love humid, wet areas.

These insects don’t carry any diseases that are harmful to humans or animals, so they are more of an annoyance than anything else.
Centipedes, however, if large enough, can cause damage. They are predators, so they may bite or puncture human skin with their claws. As they do this, poisonous venom is released that causes inflammation, swelling and discomfort.
Otherwise, centipedes and millipedes are harmless, and actually help homeowners by eating spiders, slugs, mites, beetles and more.
Preventing Infestation
As with all insect pests, prevention is always key to a pest-free home and garden.
There are many types of centipedes and millipedes, but all are attracted to dark, moist conditions, which is why they are often found in garages, basements, under stones and beneath soil.
They also tend to stay in areas where food is easily accessible. Centipedes eat household pests, while millipedes enjoy decaying food.
The easiest way to prevent infestation is keeping a clean house, which in turn will attract less pests.

Less pests and no mess = no centipede or millipede infestation.
Keeping places well ventilated and dry also will deter these insects from making your house their home.

I have about 20 of what i think are millipedes crawling around in my basement. They are about 0.5-1″ long and brown with many legs and slow moving. When they die they curl up.
I live in MA and they tend to come into my basement when it is hot outside. They die after a day or so, but I am getting sick of vacuuming them up! I cannot find where they might be coming from.
Are they really millipedes? Whats the best way to stop them in the long term besides just spraying now… we already have a de-humidifier and not any sources of moisture.
