Tips & Tricks for Organic Gardeners

Work From the Ground Up

Soil is the most important part of any garden. Taking proper care of your soil will lead to healthier plants, less weeds and a better looking garden.

Before you begin planting, check out the chemical balance of your soil. Some plants require a more acidic environment, while others prefer soil that is a bit more neutral. Adding a thick layer of pine needles will help to add acid to the soil.

When you are ready to plant, remember to fertilize your soil first. Using composted materials is a great organic way to add nutrients to your soil. If you haven’t started a compost already, consider starting one today.

After planting the seeds, allow them time to sprout. When sprouts are visible, spread a 3″ layer of mulch around the garden to provide weed control naturally and organically. Not only is this a great way to deter pesky weeds from growing, it also enhances the entire look of the garden.

Plant the Proper Seeds

Always take into consideration the location of your garden. The amount of sunlight required by each plant varies, so be sure to plant the correct plants for your garden.

For a beginning organic gardener, a shade garden is an easy alternative to the traditional full sun option. Shade gardens require less water and have less weeds, which is definitely an added bonus.

The Best Organic Pesticides & Herbicides

The pesticides and herbicides chosen by the organic gardener are almost as important as the plants they have selected for their garden.

EcoSMART offers a wide range of effective organic pesticides and herbicides that offer natural pest and weed control. Not only are these products safe for use around small children and pets, they also will not cause damage to the ecosystem.

I am growing a garden for the first time ever which makes me very nervous. I planted some pumpkin seeds which have sprouted; unfortunately, grass is also thriving now. Is your weed control safe to kill the grass but not the vegetation? Please advise.

    Olga,

The herbicide will kill all plants it comes into contact with. To kill the grass, just be sure to spray the herbicide ONLY on the grass and avoid the vegetation.

    Best of luck!

    Zach
