Put Down The Bug Bomb, Pick Up The EcoSMART
August 13th, 2010 Posted in Organic & Chemical PesticidesToday, we are constantly searching for the fastest and most effective solutions to our problems.
At first, bug bombs seem to promise just that—a quick way to get rid of the pests hidden in your home. Yet, research has proven that despite the hype, bug bombs aren’t nearly as effective as they seem.

So what can you do?
Keep reading and find out.
The Bug Bomb Hoax
Bug bombs promise effective pest control in about 4 hours. Just start them and leave the house for a while. When you get back, all your bug woes will have vanished.
Sounds too good to be true, right?
That’s because it is. The concentrated spray rarely penetrates the small cracks and crevices of your home where insects love to hide, which renders this inconvenient method of pest control pretty useless. In fact, it often just encourages bugs to relocate to different, harder-to-find places in your house.
Not to mention, the aerosol fumes are responsible for a number of fires and explosions in homes just like yours each year.
Read this bug bomb article and discover all the downfalls of this ineffective, inefficient pest control technique.
5 Easy Bug Prevention Techniques
The best method of pest control is prevention. If bugs don’t enter your house, they won’t be able to settle in, meaning they won’t be able to forever bother you and your family.
Follow these 5 easy prevention techniques to get a head start on the fight against insect pests:
- Always keep a clean house. By disposing of food scraps, piles of papers and magazines, and keeping all edibles covered and sealed, you will eliminate sources of food and shelter for insects.
- Seal up all cracks and crevices. Look around your home for any possible points of entry like cracks in window panes, walls, and ceilings. Be sure to check the attic and basement as well, as these are usually the main source of entry for many bugs. Once you find possible points of entry, seal them up to deter bugs from coming inside.
- Stay dry. Water leaks and exposed water sources like pet dishes and drainage leaks can act as an attractant to bugs more suited for tropical environments. Cover these up and towel them down when they are not in use to keep hard-to-eliminate bugs like cockroaches from invading your home.
- Plant a bug-repelling garden. Planting mint in your garden has been shown to ward of ants. But for those who don’t have room to plant a garden, sprinkle some cayenne pepper or dried peppermint along windows and other entry points to deter these bothersome pests.
- Change your light bulbs. As strange as this may sound, switching your white outdoor light bulbs with yellow ones will help to deter pests, rather than attract them.

You can also try these additional prevention techniques if you are in need of serious bug control.

I’ve been interested in an organic way to kill/repel bugs more over stink bugs in my house. Just in one evening I’ve caught and killed over thirty of them after spraying outside my house while I made my pregnant wife and daughter leave so I could spray. When they came back, they could still smell the spray which makes me hesitant to do this again. But yet they hate the bugs in the house with a passion. I have a much older home, so to seal all cracks is near impossible. I grow mint outside, and it kinda helps with them, but not much. I’ve read about nicotine but none of us smoke, and it’s not something that I’m interested in with two dogs, a cat, a pregnant wife, and a five year old child. Your product interests me and I would really like the chance to try it with the infestation of stink bugs I have trying to get into my house.

Hi am joe and I live in Bergenfield NJ. Been waking up with bites after bites in my bedroom. I did pay for the spray bottle and powder and even wrap both my mattress in protective covers. But still the bites around my boddy keeps happening. I would love the chance to try something that might end my itchy bug bites and allow me to once again sleep and dream. I will be your product tester. Thank You. jOe B

I’m pretty sure I have some sort of flying beetle (my dad thinks they are beetles) that once I kill one another one appears. I think they’re hiding in the cracks of my ceiling because I live in a house with a wooden slanted ceiling with cracks in between each piece of wood. I think they’re hiding in there but I also have an air conditioner in my window. I taped up the window with so much duct tape I feel like they can’t be getting in through there. I really just want to get rid of them. I can’t sleep and have been sleeping in my living room for the past couple of nights and miss my room! I hope this works.

We just bought a house that is infested with spiders and wool moths. The attic is so full of bugs and spiders they seem to scatter when you walk around there. I was thinking that a bug bomb in the attic would help, however reading this article makes me wonder what I can do….

I am seriously interested in your products. I am terrified of palmetto bugs. I have 3 cats so the stuff I use I can’t spray in the house because it is poisiness to animals. not only that I now have these tiny little black bugs in my cupboards where I keep food and I have no clue what they are. I can’t keep cereal or any boxed food in my cupboards now because they get into it and I have to throw the food out and to top it off little tiny black ants keep invading my house and mosquito’s chew me up to pieces so I can’t enjoy going outside at night with the 2 kids I have left living at home. I am at my wits end and I want to know so much more about your products. The sad part is I learned the hard way about how deadly pestisides are to animals. When we were getting ready to move to our home here, the woman that managed the house we lived in had told the owner we had already moved out and we had a cat. To make a long story short while the kids and I were out getting the last few boxes we needed the owners parents came to the house and sprayed. By the time we got home and found them there it was to late. Our cat Princess that we had rescuded 3 years prior had evidently rolled in it as she loved to roll on anything wet. We used to have to cage her when we mopped the floor and then dry the floor with a towel just so she wouldn’t go roll on the floor. We didn’t realize it till it was to late and she died not even 24 hours later. It still breaks my heart and we miss her so much!!!!!! Never again will I allow anyone to spray in my home and I am always careful when I spray outside and in the garage that I don’t track anything in. Oh and also we are constantly fighting wasp here. As soon as we kill a nest another pops up. BTW the 3 cats we have are strictly indoors!!!!!!! Never outside!!!!!! Please send me more information about your products. Thank you.
