5 Reasons to Eat Organic

August 17th, 2010 Posted in Green Living & News, Organic & Chemical Pesticides

The organic food movement has become increasingly popular as science has shown us more and more harmful effects of pesticides.

However, a recent study has just released data on how much harmful pesticide we are actually consuming when we don’t eat organic fruits and vegetables. The number is probably bigger than you’d want to believe.

In short, eating organic is not only healthier, it also lowers your risk for pesticide-induced diseases, like ADHD.

Here are 5 reasons to start eating organic now.

1. Pesticides are dangerous.

Just because synthetic chemical pesticides are widely used doesn’t mean they are good for your health. In fact, many pesticides have been up for debate to be removed from the market, and many have been banned because of their dangerous health effects.

Not to mention, it was recently demonstrated that the levels of pesticides in children who consumed non-organic produce was drastically higher than those who consumed organic fruits and vegetables.

Many pesticides are suspected to be the cause of neurological damage in children, and may also be one of the causes of ADHD in young children. In adults, pesticides can cause other health problems, including blindness, respiratory issues and more.

2. Local farms need your support.

Supporting local farms is just like supporting local businesses. It is a great way to support your community and get fresh, healthy produce.

This is often a cheaper, more economical way to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and you can enjoy all the delicious produce of the season. Co-op farms allow members to purchase a share of the farm, and then the produce is often delivered or picked up by shareholders.

Supporting local farms is a great way to eat organic foods—especially if you don’t have time to garden.

Just remember, be sure that they use only organic pesticides and herbicides on their products.

3. Organic foods have more nutrients.

Not only are they free of dangerous pesticide residue, organic foods also have a higher nutrient content.

Just be sure to eat the skins (after rinsing them), of course, as that is where most of the nutrients are.

4. Growing your own produce saves money.

If you want to start to eat organic, it may be a good idea to start to grow organic, too.

Small indoor gardens are a great way to grow herbs and other vegetables, making it easy to add flavor and zest to your foods. For those who have room, an outdoor garden is a great way to grow produce that can be enjoyed all season long.

So, go ahead and be like everyone else and eat organic.

Eating organic benefits you, your community and even the environment.

I think I have the best reason to eat organic that you have not listed, I am nursing my daughter and don’t want her getting anything toxic through me! I grow as many of my own vegetables as I can and would love to test your organic products.
