The Lowdown on Pantry Bugs
There are many different types of pantry bugs, and each one brings their own set of problems. Beetles, spiders and moths are among some of the more common pantry pests.
Pantry bug eggs are very small, and are often found in pasta, flour, nuts, bulk foods, dried chili and other grain products. The larvae and eggs are usually in these packages when in the supermarket, and then, they spread and continue multiplying when you take these items home. Gross, but true.

Boxes of food, however, are not the only breeding grounds for pantry bugs. They often reproduce in rodent and insect nests and traps, and then enter the home later in search for a better food source. Pet food also entices pantry bugs, and supplies them with a place to feed.
This is just one more reason that thorough cleaning and proper implementation of prevention techniques must be done.
Prevention Made Easy
Prevention is the best way to avoid a hard-to-eliminate bugs in pantry problem. It is much easier to prevent an infestation than it is to treat one.
Cleaning is the most important tool in pantry bug prevention. Cleaning up all food debris, including spills inside the pantry, on the ground and around pet bowls is a great way to eliminate food sources. Also be sure to get rid of any rodent and insect nests around and in the home.
Aside from cleaning, which will prevent nearly every bug from infesting your house, you can also use the freezer to treat any possible infestations before it’s too late.

Putting all possibly contaminated foods in the freezer for 3-7 days will kill any bugs that may have hatched, as well as any eggs and larvae that are inside the package.
Keeping food sealed in airtight glass or metal containers also helps to prevent a bugs in pantry problem. Bugs can chew through plastic and cardboard.
If you have a problem with moths in your pantry, just leave the light on at night and catch them when they are out of hiding. This is a great way to get rid of these annoying pests before they eat your clothing, too.

I always seem to have a problem with fruit flies in the summer. I have always assumed it is due to fresh produce, but now I know there are other culprits. I had no idea I could put the stuff in the freezer to kill the bugs, thanks! I also have never wanted to spray anything since it was the kitchen. Glad I now have a safe alternative.

Pantry bugs and fruit flies have long been my sworn enemies, and now we have a new nemesis in the stink bugs that seem to thrive in our new house. So glad to find a green alternative to pesticides to deal with them! Aloha.
